Wednesday 26 August 2015, Victoria Park
A Lowland League Borders derby between Vale of Leithen and Gala Fairydean Rovers.
Vale have started the season with three defeats, but had a commendable 1-0 win at Cumbernauld Colts in their last league game. Since I saw Gala’s impressive win on the opening league game at Preston Athletic, they’ve lost two and won one.
Since I last saw Vale, former Spartans and Whitehill Welfare manager Mike Lawson has taken charge. Lawson is 66 now, which ironically, is the year which most of his patter comes from.
We are around 3 minutes late entering the ground.
Hearts winger Sam Nicholson is in the crowd of around 100.
The first action of note we see comes in 6 minutes when a ball into the Gala box finds the head of Flanagan, but he doesn’t connect well. Lawson shouts “get the hair out of your eyes” to his bald midfielder.
A good run forward by Vale’s McIntosh in 10 minutes seems him bursting through the middle but his shot from the edge of the box is held by Wilson.
In 13 minutes, Gala’s McColm passes wide to Gibson, who plays it inside to Noble, but his low shot is blocked by McQueen in the Vale goal.
A minute later, Aitchison lobs the ball forward for Noble who runs on to the ball before shooting low into the bottom corner to give Gala the lead.
Vale get a free kick in 15 minutes and it’s crossed into the box where Wilson comes to claim but the ball goes over his head. There is no-one from Vale there to take advantage.
Back up the other end and Gibson finds Noble in the box after 16 minutes, but his quick shot goes just wide of the goal.
A Vale corner after 24 minutes is taken by McIntosh and is met by the head of J Stevens, but it’s straight at the keeper.
Gala’s Gibson shows good strength in 25 minutes to outmuscle two defenders before his shot from the edge of the box goes narrowly wide.
Aitchison is lucky to escape punishment when he and Sclater chase the ball, with the Gala player pushing the full back.
Gibson holds the ball up well for Gala in 32 minutes and he evades the attentions of McLeod, but his shot goes well over the bar.
Gallacher puts the ball just wide of the post for Vale in 42 minutes with a team mate unsuccessful in getting a touch at the back post to force the ball in.
A Gala free kick right on half time is hit into the wall, which looked nowhere near 10 yards away, by Aitchison.
Vale look to start the second half strongly and half time sub Guy sees his shot blocked in 46 minutes. It comes to Flanagan whose shot hits Galbraith on the back and goes over the bar.
Guy features again in 47 minutes when a Gala defender completely miscues a clearance and it goes straight to Guy, who puts it in the bottom corner for the equaliser. Quite a substitution.
Rixon receives treatment in 48 minutes after being caught by Gala’s Jardine, but has to go off.
Mitchell manages to create a chance for himself in 49 minutes, but Wilson manages to block the Vale player’s effort.
A good move by Gala in 51 minutes ends with Guiney latching on to a knock down, but McQueen clears.
After 58 minutes, Gala’s Aitchison plays the ball inside for Miller, but his shot is well over the bar.
Vale manager Lawson is becoming increasingly frustrated whenever his team pass back to the keeper. He really hates it.
The home side come forward in 61 minutes and Guy has a shot from outside the box which hits Galbraith and to the surprise of everyone, the referee awards a penalty. It may have hit his hand, but it was certainly at his side. Flanagan rolls the penalty down the middle and Wilson almost saves with his feet, but it goes in and gives Vale the lead.
Guy receives the ball on the right in 63 minutes and Vale team mate Gallacher is free at the back post, but he overhits his cross and the chance is gone.
Wilson foils Guy in 67 minutes after he has waltzed past Galbraith and tried a shot.
In 69 minutes, Gibson receives the ball in the Vale box and Flanagan has his arms all over him as the Gala forward falls to the ground. The referee gives another penalty. Gibson hammers the ball in from the spot to level things up again.
Gallacher puts a cross into the Gala box in 74 minutes which S Stevens heads back for fellow sub Guy, but his shot goes wide of the post.
Noble goes down in the Vale box again in 77 minutes looking for a penalty, but the ref waves away his appeals. He is booked for his complaints.
A long ball forward by the away side finds Noble running clear of the defence, but McQueen does well to block at point blank range.
Guy and McIntosh both have efforts on the Gala goal in 81 minutes, with the former going over the bar and the latter wide.
The Vale bench exchange knowing glances as Gala’s pretty physio runs on to treat an injured player. Lawson states that “things have changed in the last 40 years”. After his player is flagged offside in 82 minutes, he is asking the crowd if they thought he was off.
With 5 minutes to go, Guy wins Vale a corner. O’Brien’s corner is fumbled by Wilson and S Stevens is on hand to nod into the net to give Vale the lead.
In 88 minutes, Gibson plays the ball through to Clapperton, but Lynch makes a great saving tackle. The resultant corner is punched clear by McQueen.
There’s still time for a final Lawsonism as he advises an injured player ‘just get up son, it’s only a broken leg’.
Vale manage to hold on to record the victory in what was an entertaining evening. Vale’s Gallacher was impressive running with the ball at his feet and Gibson’s strength caused problems for the Vale defence all evening. Guy very much changed the game when he came on at half time.

Today we are attending the Scottish Premiership clash between Hamilton Accies and Hearts.
Since the end of last season, Accies have signed strikers Alexandre D’Acol from AEK Athens and Christian Nade from Raith Rovers, defender Jamie Sendles-White who was on the books at Queens Park Rangers, midfielders Chris Turner from Dumbarton and Gramoz Kurtaj from Czech side FK Most, goalkeeper Alan Martin from Clyde and left back Antons Kurakins from Latvian Ventspils and Norwich striker Carlton Morris. The latter being on loan.
Departing the club were Stephen Hendrie, Aldin El-Zubaidi, Nigel Hasselbaink, Jason Scotland and Blair Currie. The transfer of Hendrie to West Ham netted the club a reported £910k.
Hamilton have had a topsy-turvy start to the season, drawing on the opening day at home to Partick Thistle before losing at Ross County. These results were followed up by an impressive 4 goal home win against Dundee United before winning 2-0 in Inverness. Losing at Championship side Raith Rovers during the week suggests they are still struggling for consistency. They promote three who were on the bench during the week to the starting eleven, with those dropping out taking their seats.
Player manager Canning is struggling with a calf problem and defender Devlin is out for several weeks with an ankle injury.
Hearts have had an amazing start to the season with home wins against St Johnstone, Motherwell and Partick and away wins at Dundee and Ross County. They sit on top of the league as they visit Hamilton today. They also scraped through at League One Forfar Athletic during the week after extra time in the League Cup. They make eight changes from that game.
Despite arriving at the ground in plenty time, there are no programme sellers to be found.
Hearts start confidently, passing the ball about well and win a corner after 2 minutes which comes to nothing.
Hamilton aren’t going to let the away side have their own way though and after Crawford picks up a loose header from Gomis in 4 minutes, he strides forward and hits a great shot from 25 yards which is heading for the top corner, but Alexander dives and gets a hand to it, turning it round the post.
Crawford has another go at the Hearts goal from outside the box in 11 minutes after receiving a pass from Kurakins, but this time his shot is off target.
There’s some robust challenges going on, none more so than when Walker is taken out by an awful challenge from Kurakins on half way as the Hearts player slides the ball through for Sow. Sow’s touch is heavy and McGovern manages to smother the ball. Despite the Hearts’ fans protestations, Kurakins only gets a yellow card.
Walker, who is back on after treatment, charged forward for Hearts in the 29th minute, but his low shot from the right hand side of the box is well saved by McGovern.
Crawford has yet another attempt on the half hour after receiving the ball from MacKinnon. He tries to loft the ball over Alexander’s head, but the Hearts keeper is alive to the danger.
In 32 minutes, Sow almost breaks the deadlock. King takes a Hearts free kick which is headed across goal by Paterson. Sow gets his head to the ball inside the six yard box, but can’t direct it on target.
A glorious chance for Hamilton in 37 minutes when Morris passes to Crawford who bisects the Hearts defence and Kurtaj is clean through on goal. Just as he is about to strike for goal, he manages to clip his own heels and hit the turf, much to the delight of the Hearts fans in the 4,745 crowd.
Hearts hadn’t learned their lesson though and in 42 minutes Crawford is sent scurrying in on the away goal. He is forced wide and sends the ball into the box where Gillespie misses the ball completely, but it comes to MacKinnon ten yards out who smashes the ball over the bar.
With a minute to half time, a long ball forward by Accies is misjudged by Ozturk and it bounces over his head. Alexander comes racing out and seemed to also miss the ball as Kurtaj raced in, leaving the striker the chance to make amends for his earlier comedy moment and walking the ball into the net to give the home side the lead.
A first half which was controlled by the home side. Hearts had plenty of the ball, particularly in the early stages, but are creating very little. Accies look the most dangerous and deserve to be in front.
Hearts win a free kick on the edge of the box right at the start of the second half and Ozturk steps up to take it, but his shot is well over the bar.
MacKinnon tries a shot from distance in 50 minutes, but it’s high and wide of the Hearts goal.
In 53 minutes, Sow picks up the ball on the Hearts left and runs into the box. He gets to the by-line and cuts the ball back where King shows great composure to touch the ball away from the defenders inside the six yard box before hitting the ball with the outside of his foot high into the net for the equaliser.
With an hour gone, Sow tries a shot from distance, but it’s comfortable for McGovern in the Accies goal.
The game is being played in the middle of the park at this stage, with both teams struggling to carve out any opportunities.
Hearts come forward in 71 minutes and Juanma crosses from the left wing and finds Paterson at the back post who sends a sweetly struck first time volley flying into the net to give the Jambos the lead.
Hearts have wrestled control of the match from Accies grasp and are starting to look comfortable over the next few minutes.
Referee Willie Collum flashed a red card at Hearts Paterson in 76 minutes following a challenge on MacKinnon. It actually looked as if Paterson had been fouled from where I was, but a straight red certainly seemed harsh. The two Hamilton players that leaned over the prone Paterson shouting in his face didn’t seem to agree. In the melee that followed, several yellow cards were produced, including at least one on the Hearts bench.
Collum is already Hearts’ fans’ least favourite referee, but this certainly wouldn’t help.
Crawford continued his one man crusade to get Hamilton a goal from outside the box when he had another effort in 80 minutes, from a free kick as Hamilton see a chance to get back into the game following the red card. Alexander makes a smart save.
With 83 minutes gone, Crawford picks the ball up and hammers it towards goal from 25 yards. This time, Alexander has no chance as the ball flies into the top corner to give Accies the lead and Crawford his spectacular goal. Hearts didn’t learn the lesson to close him down.
That man Crawford has another effort in 85 minutes, but Alexander saves low down.
With three minutes left, a Crawford corner lands at the feet of Jesus Garcia Tena and his shot is blocked by a defender, but comes straight back to him and he lashes it into the net through a ruck of bodies to give Hamilton the lead.
There’s still time for Accies to pick up another couple of bookings, making it a total of seven for them, with Hearts getting three and one red. Although it was fiery at times, this seems particularly excessive.
Hearts had seemed to get over their insipid first half and looked like they were going to win but the sending off was pivotal. With concerns already there about the referee, there was a fair bit of dissent from the off and the players should know better.
Accies look a decent side and it will be interesting to see if Hearts can bounce back from this.

Today it’s the Scottish Cup Second Preliminary Round tie between Civil Service Strollers and Kelty Hearts.
Civil Service Strollers were founded in 1908 and the senior team currently play in the East of Scotland League and qualify to play in the Scottish Cup. Originally called Edinburgh Civil Service Football Club, they began at the Stenhouse Stadium before moving to Pinkhill Stadium in the 1920s. They moved to the Edinburgh Area Civil Service Sports Association in the Muirhouse area of Edinburgh in 1957, where they still play today. Earlier this year, the Scottish Football Partnership made a Facilities Award to the Strollers to assist with the cost of installing a covered spectator enclosure at the ground.
Strollers have lost their opening two league games this season, and knocked Newton Stewart out of the Scottish Cup in the first preliminary round by three goals to nil. They finished fifth out of nine in the East of Scotland Premier Division last season, before the Premier and First Divisions amalgamated to form one League starting this season.
Kelty Hearts were formed in 1975 and after initially working their way up the amateur leagues in Fife, they played a friendly against local junior side Halbeath Juniors in 1979, who were about to play in the Junior Cup Quarter Final. Halbeath signed five of Kelty’s players (who beat them 3-1) at the end of the season, which led to the management team resigning and other players leaving the club.
A new committee decided it was time to turn Junior the following season and after a lot of hard work and manager Jim Leishman (yes that one) the team got through their first season in the Juniors. Leishman didn’t stay long, but the team went from strength to strength in the Fife Leagues.
They moved to the East Region along with the other Fife junior clubs in 2002 and in 2006/07 they were promoted to the East Super League.
They have twice made it to the Junior Cup Final in their short history, in 1999 and 2007, but they have lost in both. Last season, they surprised many by running off with the East Super League title for the first time.
Three wins, two draws and a defeat so far in the Super League for Kelty and they are making their Scottish Cup debut today, entering at this stage.
Former Hearts, Bradford City, Kilmarnock etc manager (and Hearts and Berwick Rangers player) Jim Jeffries is in attendance.
A very solid tackle from Strollers Wilson in the second minute looks to set the tone for the afternoon.
A good hit by C Courts at the Strollers’ goal in 4 minutes is comfortably saved by Burnside.
Kelty come forward in 8 minutes and a cross from McCabe is deflected off defender Wilson’s head towards goal, but Burnside is alert to the danger.
Strollers win the first corner of the game in 9 minutes, but it comes to nothing.
In 13 minutes, C Courts picks out Smith in the box who tries an acrobatic half volley which goes across the face of goal. Cargill, who was free at the back post, is disappointed not to have received a pass.
A good turn in the box in the 14th minute by Smith sees him hit a powerful shot which Burnside does well to turn round the post.
A great move by Kelty in 18 minutes sees the ball come to Smith, but the defence manages to get it away just as he is about to strike.
Strollers play the ball to the back post in 19 minutes and Ballantyne manages to beat Gates, but there is no power in his shot.
With 29 minutes gone, Kelty get a free kick around 25 yards from goal and Husband steps up and curls it expertly round the wall and into the net to give the Fifers the lead.
Kelty create another good chance in 33 minutes with C Courts picking out O’Neill in the box, but he fails to control the ball under pressure.
The away side seem keen to get a second before half time and in 35 minutes Cargill cuts the ball back for Gates, whose low effort goes just wide with the keeper rooted to the spot.
The pressure continues with Kelty winning a corner in 36 minutes. C Courts cross is headed down by T Courts. Husband plays it back into the box and finds Cargill on the penalty spot all alone. With the defenders claiming offside he wrong foots Burnside and puts the ball in the net.
Cargill is nearly through again for Kelty in 41 minutes, but he tries a bit too much when he should have released McCabe and the keeper gathers.
Some good skill by Smith in 42 minutes before he passes to Cargill. The Kelty striker sends a curling effort from 22 yards into the top corner giving Burnside no chance.
Strollers have huffed and puffed, but Kelty have shown their class in the first half and look a very good side.
In 49 minutes, Kelty’s Ritchie charges into the box and backheels the ball for McCabe, but the defence manage to clear.
McCabe brings the ball forward in 54 minutes and passes to Smith who hits a powerful shot towards the Strollers’ goal, but Burnside does well to stop it.
Kelty come forward again in 63 minutes and Smith finds C Courts who plays the ball to the overlapping Gates. The full back curls the ball into the net with the outside of his foot to get Kelty’s fourth.
Strollers create a rare chance in 69 minutes when Ballantyne finds Stewart at the back post and it’s hit well towards goal, but O’Neill gets in the way.
Cargill is booked for diving in 77 minutes after going down in the box under a challenge from Strollers’ Wilson. I’m not sure from where I am if he had a case or not.
Strollers are still showing a great deal of fight and putting in some pretty hefty challenges, despite the scoreline.
In 88 minutes the ball is played to the feet of Cargill in the box and the Kelty striker turns and fires towards goal and sees his effort come back off the post to deny him his hat-trick.
O’Reilly has a shot at goal in 89 minutes, but the Kelty sub sees his attempt deflected wide. He tries his luck again a minute later and hits it well, but it’s straight at Burnside.
Strollers have a final chance to get on the scoresheet in injury time when the ball is cleared from a corner to the edge of the box, but number 17 blasts over.
A comfortable win for Kelty Hearts that never looked in doubt. The Courts brothers were both impressive, with Conrad controlling the midfield ably assisted by Husband. Cargill always looked a danger up front.
Strollers showed a lot of spirit and McWhirter and Wilson were particularly impressive. The fight they showed will give a lot of teams problems.

Sunday afternoon spent in Dalkeith watching Hearts Ladies take on Inverness City Ladies in the Scottish Women’s Premier League.
City have not had a great season and have only collected two points in their 16 games so far. Albeit one of them was at Peffermill against Hearts before the league split. Hearts still have an outside chance of escaping demotion currently sitting ninth in the 12 team league, but with league reconstruction happening for the new season, only the top 8 stay up.
Hearts get an early corner in 2 minutes which is taken by McLaughlin and is met by the head of Farquharson, but it goes wide.
McLaughlin has a good run to the by-line for Hearts in 4 minutes, but can’t pick out a team mate in the middle.
Hearts continue to make the early running and a long ball forward by Smith after 7 minutes finds Anderson running towards goal, but McCarthy manages to get a tackle in.
A Nicolson shot from the edge of the box has Jappy scrambling in the City goal, but she gets down well to save in 9 minutes.
Despite Hearts’ early dominance, City have a great chance to take the lead in 11 minutes when the Hearts defence is caught flat footed as the ball is played through to Maclean. Farrell is well out of her goal and the City player rounds her easily, but can’t get her shot on target and the chance is gone.
Hearts get a free kick out on the right in 12 minutes, and Kidd delivers the ball to the back post, but nobody can get a decisive touch.
A great ball forward by Paterson in 20 minutes sees both Anderson and McLaughlin charging towards the City goal, but the ball just runs away from them.
Anderson receives the ball on Hearts right after 29 minutes and her cross into the box finds the unmarked McLaughlin in the six yard box and she volleys into the net to give Hearts the lead.
In the next minute, McLaughlin wins Hearts a corner and Falconer’s corner finds the head of Nicolson, but it’s just too high and lands on the top of the net.
Faughnan is showing some great skill in the middle of the park for Hearts.
Some good build up play by Hearts in 35 minutes ends with a chance for McMahon in the middle of the box, but she shoots wide of the post.
Autumn Farrell in the Hearts goal is particularly ranty at her team mates today.
In 42 minutes, City’s Brady picks out Maclean, but she shoots wide.
So Hearts lead by the only goal at half time and have looked the more threatening side throughout, but have lacked a cutting edge in front of goal. City are working hard and will be hopeful that they can grab an equaliser in the second half.
Kudos to sole Inverness City substitute “Rachel”, who has spent the entire first half warming up on her own up and down the touchline. Hopefully she will get some game time in the second half.
A great ball from Hearts’ McMahon in 53 minutes finds Kidd whose cross in to the middle is inches away from the onrushing McLaughlin in the middle.
McLaughlin does well to win Hearts a corner in 54 minutes and takes it herself. Farquharson wins the header and it bounces down, but goes inches wide.
Another cross by McLaughlin after 56 minutes finds the head of McMahon, but she can’t direct it on target.
City look to attack in 57 minutes and Deans finds Nichol who shoots from distance and Farrell is down well to push the shot away.
In 59 minutes, a good turn by Hearts McMahon creates some space, but she is pulled back by Nichol. Farquharson’s free kick into the box is eventually cleared away.
Falconer is wide on the left for Hearts in 61 minutes and fires the ball towards goal. Jappy gets her fingertips to it and the ball comes back off the post and bounces to safety.
There’s a scramble in the Inverness box in 62 minutes, but the ball won’t fall for a Hearts player and the defence manages to get it away.
McLaughlin picks up the ball in 64 minutes and runs towards the City goal. She shoots from the edge of the box, but it goes just wide.
A good run forward by Anderson in 73 minutes gives Hearts another chance and she plays the ball to McMahon who cuts inside and curls an effort towards goal, but it’s wide of the post.
Nichol brings down McLaughlin on the edge of her own box in 78 minutes and Farquharson steps up to take the free kick, but hits it high over the Inverness bar.
In 80 minutes, Anderson slides the ball through for McLaughlin who has a clear run on goal, but the flag goes up. Looked onside from where I was.
McCarthy seems to go through the back of Anderson in 85 minutes and the Hearts player needs treatment before continuing.
As we enter injury time, Anderson breaks down the left for Hearts and cuts the ball back for sub Robertson to fire past Jappy to make it two.
Hearts were not at their best and an improved performance by City judging by their recent results. Best for Hearts were Kidd, Nicolson, Farquharson and McLaughlin, with Hibs loanee McMahon showing some nice touches in midfield. McCarthy and Deans were best for Inverness. Despite her warming up for the whole of the second half as well, Rachel never did get on.
