Wednesday 1 April 2015, Ferguson Park

A midweek fixture in the Lowland League tonight with Whitehill Welfare facing Vale of Leithen.

Welfare will certainly have their eye on 3 points tonight if they are to have any chance of finishing second in the league.  This would give them a spot in the Scottish Cup next season.  After thrashing struggling Threave Rovers at the weekend, they will be hoping that momentum is building to help them climb the table.

It’s been quite a turbulent season for Vale.  After major financial problems, a big turnover of players and a new management team and board, they should be pleased that they are far enough away from relegation not to be too concerned about their league position.

After seeing Vale in my first two games I attended this season, I haven’t watched them since August.  It’s also my first sight of Welfare this year, having last seen them in December.

Despite my best efforts, I am unable to put a name to the numbers of most of the Vale team.

072

Not the greatest of starts for the away side as O’Brien is forced off inside the first 5 minutes after a challenge with Hall.

In the seventh minute, the Vale number 7 outpaces McKenzie, but his ball across goal has no takers.

Another injury for Vale in the 10th minute and White receives lengthy treatment before looking as though he is able to carry on.

A Welfare corner in 14 minutes is taken by Andrew Kidd, but is headed clear.

White has to succumb to his injury soon after and Vale have used two of their requisite 3 subs in the first 15 minutes.

085

In 17 minutes, the ball is played to Manson by McIntosh.  He cuts inside and beats a couple of defenders beautifully before he plays the ball back to McIntosh who fluffs his shot.  The ball goes wide and McIntosh has another go, and he’s unlucky to see it hit the outside of the post.

The referee is clearly concerned about the light already as he shouts across to Whitehill manager Lawson “Two minute half time Mickey, quick turnaround”.

A long ball forward by Vale in 20 minutes is flicked on by 7.  Substitute Shaun Stevens runs on to the ball and manages to flick it past the onrushing Young in the home goal.  The ball trundles towards the goal and despite the best efforts of a defender, it finds the net to give the side from Innerleithen the lead

A minute after the opening goal, Vale’s number 15 runs onto the ball, but a shot at goal from a tight angle is held by Young.

Manson wins a 50/50 tackle with a strong challenge for Whitehill in midfield in 24 minutes, then plays the ball through for Somerville who skips around the keeper and slots home into the empty net for the equaliser.  His 30th goal of the season.

There’s what I count to be around 70 in attendance, including Hearts player Sam Nicholson, although the official figure given is 106.

092

It’s a very young looking home bench tonight.

Vale are breaking forward very quickly and Welfare are having problems dealing with the pace at which these attacks are coming.

In 29 minutes, Vales number 2 comes forward and skews a shot wide of the target.

The home defence are caught out in 37 minutes when a ball to the back post finds Gill in acres of space.  He half volleys at goal, but his dipping effort goes just over the bar.

Vale are continuing to look dangerous and Gill plays the ball to Shaun Stevens in 40 minutes and the striker turns beautifully, but can’t trouble the keeper with his curling attempt.

McIntosh lines up a free kick on the edge of the box for Welfare in 43 minutes, but his shot is well over the bar.

Right on half time, a ball to the back post by McIntosh looks to pick out Noon, but with a Vale defender putting him under pressure, he can’t get the ball on target.

There seems to be an influx of spectators at half time, which probably contributes to there being no pies left.

The second half does kick off a little early, but not hugely so.

With 47 minutes gone, Vale’s 7 manages to outmuscle the bigger McKenzie, but his curling shot is straight at Young.

Vale’s 2 and Noon have a few afters in the 53rd minute and McIntosh gets a talking to from the ref following an off the ball incident.  The referee tells him “it’s not a discussion, it’s me telling you”.

In 56 minutes, a nice one two between Whitehill’s Noon and McIntosh sees the ball played to Manson.  Number 2 clatters him to give Welfare a free kick on the edge of the box, but Andrew Kidd’s effort is well over.

112

The game is in danger of spilling over and Vale’s 7 is booked for something which took place off the ball, before Vale’s 10 seems to throw a punch at Somerville after the Whitehill player had fouled him.

The niggly fouls are frequent now.

A good move by the home side in 65 minutes ends with Somerville’s cross being blocked for a corner which comes to nothing.

A long ball forward by the Welfare defence in 68 minutes creates a chance for McIntosh, but McQueen does well to save with his feet.

Vale break quickly in 69 minutes and 15’s cross finds Flanagan, whose diving header at the near post gives Young no chance to give Vale the lead.

095

Whitehill come very close to an equaliser in 75 minutes when McQueen fumbles the ball behind.  The resultant corner comes off the crossbar, and as the keeper attempts to punch clear, it comes off the bar again.

A great run and cross from O’Donnell in 78 minutes almost creates a chance for Whitehill, but McGlashan can’t quite connect in the middle.

A fabulous piece of skill by Vale’s 10 in his own half in the 80th minute, is followed up by his long ball forward which Shaun Stevens latches on to and slots past the keeper to make it 3-1 to Vale.

With 10 minutes left, it is getting cold.  And dark.

Welfare haven’t given up yet though and McIntosh’s long ball into the box in 83 minutes finds the head of substitute Flynn, who nods past Young to give Welfare hope.

098

An amazing scramble in the Vale goalmouth with three minutes left culminates in the ball dropping the feet of O’Donnell right in front of the keeper.  He spins and shoots goalwards and the ball hits a defender on the line.  An incredible escape.

In 89 minutes, Andrew Kidd gets his second yellow card for what seemed to be something he said to the referee. That may be the end of Whitehill’s hopes of getting something from the game.

In the last minute, Vale’s 7 breaks through a couple of tackles on the by-line and centres the ball for Shaun Stevens who completes his hat-trick and confirms Vale’s victory.

107

A good win for Vale of Leithen and Welfare look like they have lots of work to do.

4 April 2015, Cliftonhill

036

It’s a long time since I’ve been to Cliftonhill. This afternoon’s Scottish League Two game between Albion Rovers and Berwick Rangers is a big game for the home side.

Rovers were looking as though they had the title wrapped up after going 7 points clear at the top until losing at home to mid table Elgin City by 3 goals to nil last weekend. As seems to be the way with this league though, none of the results are predictable. Second placed Queen’s Park could only draw, while 3rd placed Arbroath continue their free fall by losing. With four games left after this one, a win today would go a long way towards sealing promotion.

Berwick still have a chance of making the play offs, and I was very impressed with them when I saw them against Arbroath in February. It was them who drew with second place Queens Park last weekend and they are unbeaten in four. They also won at the same ground in their run to the Scottish Cup quarter final.

With 15 minutes to kick off, the tannoy plays the theme from the “A” Team. The only Face anyone was pulling today was at the incredible lack of leg room in the stand. Although there is a standing area at the front, I’d decided upon a seat and had to go to the back row before I could find anywhere that I could fit my legs in. Admittedly, I am a giant, but it’s the least amount of space I have ever had, with the possible exception of the old stand at Tannadice.

While Rovers are pretty much at full strength, Berwick have Bald, Notman, Drummond, Lavery and Tulloch all out, but welcome Partick Thistle striker Chris Dillon to the squad.

079

Rovers get an early free kick, midway inside the Berwick half, but it’s hit too deep.

In the fifth minute, Berwick have a free kick in a similar position after Gold is fouled, but Parry comes and catches the delivery.

Gold is down again for Berwick in 7 minutes, left in a heap by a Young challenge. Maxwell swings the ball into the box where Gold heads it down, but Dunlop does well to hook the ball away.

Rangers break forward in the 10th minute and Russell plays the ball to Willis who strides forward and lets fly from distance, but it’s too near Parry who gathers.

086

McGuigan receives the ball at his feet on the edge of the Berwick box in 12 minutes and lays it off to McKenzie, whose shot is blocked. McKenzie is showing plenty of desire for Rovers.

With 16 minutes gone, McGuigan plays the ball wide to Cadden, who gets to the Berwick goal line, but he takes too long to get the cross over and Fairbairn blocks it behind for a corner which Andrews punches clear.

A great deep cross by Willis in 20 minutes finds Berwick team mate Henderson at the back post, but his looping header goes just over.

Willis goes down under a challenge on the edge of the Rovers box in 23 minutes, which looked like a dive and he takes the free kick himself, but it takes a deflection off the defensive wall and goes over the bar for a fruitless corner.

108

Berwick force three corners in a row in quick succession, but they can’t make anything of them.

In 31 minutes Jacobs plays the ball to Gold, who turns beautifully, but he hits a trundling shot at goal which is easy for the Rovers keeper.

A minute later, Davidson threads a through ball to McGuigan who only has the Berwick keeper to beat, but Andrews manages to block with his feet.

Willis is showing up well in Berwick’s midfield and seems to be involved in everything good that they do.

Maxwell goes in the book after he hauls down Rovers’ Cadden as he charged through the middle in 37 minutes. Fisher’s free kick is headed towards goal by McGuigan, but it’s straight at the keeper.

Berwick are still in this game though and with five minutes to half time, Russell gets to the by-line and fires the ball across goal, but Henderson can’t get there.

Fairbairn joins his colleague in obtaining a yellow card after hauling down Cadden, as the Rovers midfielder runs at the defence.

Just before half time a cross into the Berwick box comes to McGuigan, but he takes too long waiting for the ball to drop and his shot is blocked.

As the half time whistle goes, there is some great build up play and passing by Berwick.

So all square at half time and the away side have looked pretty good in the first half. The game looks like it could go either way at this stage.

Cadden begins the second half as he ended the first, charging at the Berwick defence. Jacobs just manages to intercept his attempted pass.

In 49 minutes, a deep cross by Berwick’s Russell is just too high for Henderson.

128

Young brings the ball forward for Berwick in the 53rd minute and lets fly from distance and sees his shot headed behind by number 6 Dunlop.

A quick break forward by Rovers in 55 minutes sees McKenzie brought down 25 yards from goal. Davidson takes the free kick and hits it well, but his low effort is smothered by the keeper.

In the 62nd minute, the ball is played to the feet of Motherwell loanee Cadden and the Rovers player turns quickly on the edge of the box and rifles the ball into the net to give the home side the lead to the joy of most of the 439 in attendance.

130

A flurry of substitutions and a booking for Rovers’ Young, before Young of Berwick also goes into the book for bringing down McKenzie on the edge of box. From that free kick in 69 minutes, Davidson falls as he takes it, and although the shot is still on target it’s easy for Andrews.

142

In 72 minutes, Rovers’ McKenzie gets to the by-line and crosses to the back post where McGuigan meets the ball expertly with his head to double the lead.

143

Some good build up play by Berwick in 81 minutes ends with Willis hooking a shot over the bar.

Cadden runs at the defence again in 82 minutes, but his shot goes wide.

In 41 minutes, Cadden has the chance to seal it, but he can’t get the ball out of his feet and can only hit a tame effort at goal.

A long ball forward with 2 minutes to go finds McGuigan in the box for Rovers, but Fairbairn does well to tidy up for Berwick.

Berwick sub Gray plays the ball into Henderson’s feet in the box in the last minute and he lays it off to another sub, Dillon, but he is off target with his effort.

153

A big win for the home side, but Berwick again looked a good team and must be looking at next season with confidence. Rovers will surely wrap up the title soon.

Cadden was very good for Rovers and Willis probably best for Berwick.

Full Time: Albion Rovers 2 Berwick Rangers 0.

Admission: £12

Albion Rovers: 1 Parry, 2 Cadden, 3 Dunlop, 4 Young (McCluskey 83), 5 Dunlop, 6 Dunlop, 7 Ferns (Mullin 64), 8 Fisher, 9 McGuigan, 10 Davidson, 11 McKenzie. Subs: 12 Stevenson, 14 Mullin, 15 Chaplain, 16 Love, 17 Hughes, 18 McCluskey, 19 Gemmell.

Berwick Rangers: 1 Andrews, 2 Jacobs, 3 Maxwell, 4 Currie, 5 Young (Martynuik 77), 6 Fairbairn, 7 Wilkie, 8 Willis, 9 Russell (Dillon 68), 10 Henderson, 11 Gold (Gray 77). Subs: 12 Gray, 14 Martynuik, 15 Dillon, 16 Miller, 17 Bauld, 20 Bleakley.

Tuesday 7 April 2015, Fir Park

It’s many years since I have got to the month of April in a football season before seeing a game in the top league.  I’m hoping for some decent fare tonight in the game between Motherwell and St Mirren in the Scottish Premiership.

It’s a big game for both sides, with Saints bottom of the league, seven points behind Well in the play-off slot and 10 away from outright safety.  So a must win game for the men from Paisley, while a chance for Motherwell to get a bit closer to safety.

Saints captain Steven Thompson made a return to the side coming on as a late sub in their previous game against Celtic which they lost 2-0 at home and he makes the bench again.  They are without Isaac Osbourne through injury.

Motherwell have no new injury worries for the game and welcome back Marvin Johnson to the starting line-up.  After a dreadful run, they’ve lost just once in their last five matches and followed up a win against Hamilton with a win at Kilmarnock on Saturday. They’re now three behind Ross County.  4,596 attend the game.

032

In the opening minute, a fast turn by Erwin sets the Motherwell striker charging towards goal, but McGinn brings him down about 25 yards from goal.  Law’s effort is on target, but it’s comfortable for Ridgers.

Dayton wins the first corner of the game for St Mirren in the third minute.  It’s played short to Dayton, who goes down in the box under McDonald’s challenge, but the referee waves away his appeals.  It would have been very harsh.

In the seventh minute, Ainsworth picks up a loose clearance and uses his pace to get past Kelly to the by-line where he cuts it back to Erwin just outside the six yard box.  Completely unmarked, he spins quickly and rifles the ball into the bottom corner to give Well the early lead.

036

Genev does well to win the ball after a long ball forward nearly had Well through and he plays it forward to McGinn, who tries his luck from distance, but Long is well positioned.

Naismith chips the ball up the right in 9 minutes, which sets Sadlier running through into the box.  As Long comes out to narrow the angle, he drags his shot well wide of the far post.

038

St Mirren win a free kick in the 11th minute after Ainsworth tugs at McGinn and Mallan lines it up in a central position, but his effort hits the wall.

Motherwell win a corner in 14 minutes after Johnson’s attempted cross is deflected behind.  Ainsworth takes and Goodwin gets his head to it where Johnson hits at goal on the volley with great technique, but Ridgers is down quickly to turn it behind.  Ainsworth’s corner finds the unmarked McManus whose diving header is wide of the post.

041

Johnson does well wide on the left for Motherwell in 21 minutes when he nutmegs Naismith, but his attempted cross is poor and goes behind.

Goodwin concedes a needless corner in 24 minutes and Johnson’s delivery is headed away by McAusland to the corner of the box.  Ainsworth quickly plays it back into the box where it finds Erwin with his back to the goal.  With two players at his back, he switches the ball between his feet then spins and hits it into the far corner giving Ridgers no chance.  2-0 to the home side.

Goodwin has a speculative effort from distance to try and get Saints back into the game in the 26th minute, but it’s well wide.

McGinn receives the ball from Mallan in 27 minutes, but his shot is well over the bar and Saints appear to be getting desperate.

With 31 minutes gone, Erwin’s header on is flicked on by McDonald and has Johnson through on goal.  He’s brought down inside the box where he is tripped by the defender and the ref points to the spot.  The flag is up though, so a lucky escape for Saints.

McDonald sets up Lasley for a shot at goal from distance in 33 minutes, but the Well veteran’s shot is high and wide.

A St Mirren free kick on half way in 38 minutes is flicked on to McAusland at the back post and his attempted drive across goal is turned behind by Pearson.  Dayton’s corner is cleared.

A free kick in a similar position is cleared and sees Well break quickly.  Erwin receives the ball near half way and cuts inside Goodwin before releasing McDonald, who would have been one on one with the keeper, but the flag is up.

Motherwell are away again in 41 minutes when Laing wins the ball and plays it to McDonald who plays it wide to Erwin in acres of space.  He runs to the goal line and with plenty of options in the middle, miscues it behind.

Lasley controls the ball acrobatically right on half time in the middle of Saints half and lobs the ball wide to Ainsworth who turns Kelly inside out in getting to the line.  His deep cross is expertly controlled by Johnson, who cuts it back into the path of McDonald who sweeps it into the net.  Looks like game over.

058

St Mirren will need a miracle to come back from this in the second half.

Motherwell win a corner in 47 minutes and there are loud appeals for handball from the Well players, but the referee waves them away.  Looked like the ball might have hit Goodwin’s hand, but he knew nothing about it.

Mallon has a shot from distance in 54 minutes, but it’s straight into the arms of Long.  With Saints not creating chances, they seem to be shooting from distance regularly.

Ainsworth wins Well a corner in 57 minutes and takes it himself.  His cross finds McDonald’s head, but there is no power and Ridgers makes an easy save.

The Buddies win a corner off McManus in 58 minutes but Mallan’s delivery is headed

clear.  Motherwell have a great chance from the clearance as they have three against one, but Kelly manages to win the ball from Ainsworth.

In 65 minutes, Johnson picks out Ainsworth just outside the box, and his low effort through a crowd of players is inches wide.  The ref judges that there was a nick on it and a corner is given.  Johnson’s delivery is too deep.

Mallan takes a corner for Saints in 69 minutes and the ball ricochets between players and ends up in Long’s hands.  It’s not going to be St Mirren’s day.

A free kick into the box by Mallan in the 70th minute finds the head of McAusland and Long does well to push the ball away low to his right.

Johnson wriggles his way into the Saints box in 73 minutes and Ridgers pulls off a good save low down from his shot.

McDonald is tripped wide on the right by Genev in 74 minutes and Johnson swings the ball into the near post where it is met by the head of substitute Sutton, and it’s four nil.

074

A great pass from McDonald sees Lasley in the box with the ball at his feet, but his attempted cross is cleared behind.  Johnson’s corner is headed over by Sutton.

St Mirren produce their best bit of football of the game in 77 minutes when sub Wylde picks out fellow sub Thompson on the edge of the box.  He lays it off to McGinn who plays it to Mallan, who cuts inside and curls his effort toward goal.  The shot beats Long, but comes back off the post.

Immediately, Well are back on the attack and McDonald curls the ball just wide of the post.

In 79 minutes, Well put the icing on the cake.  Young substitute Thomas beats Goodwin on the goalline with a lovely bit of skill and his shot is parried by Ridgers.  It comes to McDonald whose shot is stopped on the line by McGinn, but Sutton is there to poke home.

079

The frustrations are clearly getting to McGinn who takes out Straker with a cynical foul in 82 minutes and is carded.

The Buddies win a corner in 88 minutes, but it is easily cleared.

In the last minute, McDonald squares the ball to Johnson just inside the box, but his well hit half volley clears the bar.

McGinn shoots from distance in injury time, but Long makes a diving save.

So a very convincing win for Motherwell and they looked very impressive tonight with Ainsworth, Johnson and Erwin in particular looking good.  St Mirren looked doomed.  Not creating anything and very poor at the back.

A late winner sees Ross County beat St Johnstone to leave Well still three points from safety, but on tonight’s form, they look more than capable of staying up.

Full Time: Motherwell 5 St Mirren 0.

Motherwell: 1 Long, 18 Law, 45 Laing, 6 McManus, 44 Straker, 7 Ainsworth (Thomas – 75), 14 Lasley, 48 Pearson (Grant – 64), 24 Johnson, 77 McDonald, 19 Erwin (Sutton – 71). Subs: 5 Ramsden, 9 Sutton, 12 Twardzik, 15 O’Brien, 22 Moore, 26 Thomas, 47 Grant

Wednesday 8 April 2015, Tynecastle

A Wednesday evening game in the Scottish Championship between title winners Hearts and relegation threatened Alloa Athletic.

With Hearts having won the Championship title over two weeks ago, they may not have the same desire for their remaining fixtures, which seemed to be in evidence when they lost only their second league game of the season, away to Rangers at the weekend. Carrick and Prince Buaben are still injured, and Hamilton, McKay, Anderson and El Hassnaoui all make rare starts tonight.

Alloa have new boss Danny Lennon in charge for the first time following the resignation of Barry Smith on 7 March. The Wasps will be looking to bounce back after Sunday’s Petrofac Training Cup final defeat against Livingston. They currently sit one place above the relegation play-off spot, a point clear of second bottom Cowdenbeath and six clear of bottom Livingston. (Although the bottom two have a game in hand).  Athletic have Marr and Simmons out through injury, but Roberts returns to the squad after suspension.

Alloa form a guard of honour in a mark of respect for Hearts’ recent title win.  The evening begins with fans paying tribute to soldier and Hearts supporter Shaun Cole with a minute of applause.

007

There doesn’t seem to be the same urgency in the home side’s play and the match is 7 minutes old before the first effort on goal.  Nicholson has his shot from the edge of the box blocked, and there are halfhearted appeals that it was blocked with an arm, which the referee waves away.

010

Tiffoney has Athletic’s first attempt in the 11th minute, from outside the box, but this is also blocked.

Following a Hearts corner, Paterson has a go at goal in 19 minutes, but his shot is high and wide.

Whether it is due to the changes to the Hearts side, or whether this is more to do with more evidence of the “after the Lord Mayor’s show” effect, Hearts are struggling to break down Alloa.

021

It hadn’t been the most exciting start to the game, but it came to life in the 29th minute when Wilson cut the ball back for Keatings, but the Hearts striker rattled the post.

Almost immediately, Gomis tried a long range effort as Hearts tried to get the opening goal, but McDowall was down well to save.

As it looked as though we would reach half time goalless, the deadlock is broken in the 42nd minute.

Paterson cut inside from the right and took the ball forward before hitting a powerful shot from outside the box which took a deflection and flew past McDowall in the Alloa goal to give Hearts the lead.

028

The Jambos almost added to their lead before half time when King was next to threaten the Wasps’ goal, going on a run which saw him go past 4 Alloa players, before missing the target from a tight angle.

So the home side lead at half time, but Alloa are still working hard and will be hoping to get something in the second half.

Four minutes into the second half, and Hearts double their lead.  Keatings takes a corner which is met powerfully by Wilson who heads past the exposed keeper.

039

McCord has a shot from outside the box in 54 minutes, but the Alloa midfielder’s shot is high and wide.

Nicholson nearly adds further to Hearts lead in 55 minutes, when Paterson’s deep cross finds him unmarked, but McDowall does well to block the header.

Gomis, probably having the most shots at goal he has ever had in a game, has another go in 56 minutes, but it’s an easy save this time for the keeper.

Alloa have another shot at goal through McCord on the hour, but this time it is over the bar.

Flannigan is unlucky with a shot from 25 yards for Alloa in 65 minutes, which goes just wide of the post.

In 69 minutes, Hearts wrap up the three points.  Substitute Pallardo tries to work his way into the box and when the ball bounces up after he is challenged at the edge of the box, El Hassanoui dispatches the ball sweetly into the net on the half volley.

A particularly scrappy period followed, with substitutions and bookings to the fore.

Roberts has a shot blocked by the Hearts defence in 84 minutes.

Flannigan is getting closer for Alloa, with his long range free kick clipping the outside of the post in 86 minutes, with Hamilton throwing himself across goal to try and save.

047

Substitute Oliver goes down in the box seeking a penalty for the home side, but the referee waves away appeals.

In the last minute, Alloa’s Docherty receives a second yellow card and gets his marching orders.

049

A comfortable win for the Jam Tarts, without really getting into second gear in front of 15,156 spectators.

Full Time: Hearts 3 Alloa Athletic 0
