Tuesday 28 July 2015, Penicuik Park

Tonight sees a pre-season friendly between East Superleague Penicuik Athletic and Vale of Leithen.

In what seems ridiculous at the end of July the Scottish summer has struck again with the game, which was originally due to be played in Innerleithen, being moved to Penicuik due to the inclement weather.

It’s our second viewing of both teams this month and the late change of venue and the weather mean there are only around 50 people here.

Three of Penicuik’s players are down as trialists, but they are all just waiting on the paperwork.

001

Penicuik force a couple of early corners and from the second one in 2 minutes, Janczyk tries to chip McQueen, but he doesn’t get the required height on it.

Vale come forward in 4 minutes and Hunter passes to Stevens who goes outside the defender and strikes for goal. He hit it well and McGurk punches the ball behind for a fruitless corner.

A great run forward by Vale’s Rixon in 11 minutes sees him play the ball to Mitchell who is clean through, but he’s offside.

Janczyk finds Montgomery wide left in 15 minutes and his cross to the front post is met by the head of Somerville, but it’s well off target.

022

Vale keeper McQueen punches clear a Montgomery cross in 17 minutes. It falls to Barr whose shot at goal is blocked. It comes back to him again and he shoots for goal, but McQueen saves his curling effort.

A good run down the left by Penicuik’s Montgomery in 20 minutes after he was released by Somerville sees his cross just too hard for McCallum in the middle.

In 25 minutes, Montgomery finds Ross in the box and he turns well to beat a defender, but shoots straight at McQueen.

A quick break by Vale in 28 minutes sees Mitchell play a pass to Flanagan who crosses to the back post but can’t find Stevens.

McCallum wins a header on the edge of the box in 31 minutes, but is jumped into as he heads it. Barr almost latches on to the ball, but the referee brings it back for a Penicuik foul. Ross steps up and curls the free kick into the corner to give Penicuik the lead.

023

Vale’s Flanagan almost latches onto a through ball in 38 minutes, but McGurk is out quickly to smother.

A good move by Vale in 44 minutes sees Hunter pass to Little, who plays it on to Rixon. He gets to the by-line, but Bunyan cuts out the cross.

Right on half time, Janczyk releases Somerville who takes the ball forward and sees his curling shot from the edge of the box come back off the post.

Penicuik had the better of the first half, but Vale are certainly not out of it. Vale’s Little, Stevens and Hunter have looked good in midfield, while Janczyk’s passing has been of a very high standard for Penicuik.

032

McCallum plays the ball wide to Somerville in 48 minutes and he cuts it back to Ross whose shot is parried away by the Vale keeper.

Somerville receives the ball wide again in 51 minutes and this time he cuts inside and lets fly. McQueen turns his shot behind for a Penicuik corner. McDermott’s corner is flicked into the net at the front post by Somerville to double the home side’s lead.

039

In 58 minutes, Janczyk plays the ball to Somerville who returns it to the Penicuik midfielder. His cross in to the middle is met by the head of McCallum and McQueen spectacularly turns the ball over the bar.

A delightful cross by Montgomery in 65 minutes almost finds McCallum in the middle, but the big Penicuik striker can’t quite reach it.

Penicuik win a free kick in 68 minutes after McCallum is brought down. Janczyk steps up to take it and his effort takes a wicked deflection and flies past a helpless McQueen to put the home side three up.

Rixon tries to find Vale teammate Brady at the back post in 77 minutes, but the ball skids off the turf and beyond him.

052

With 83 minutes gone, Ross brings the ball forward for Penicuik. He plays the ball wide to substitute Lough whose cross is almost put away by McCallum, but is blocked. It comes back to Lough who hammers his shot wide of the post.

In the final minute, Ross crosses into the Vale box from the right. It comes all the way to Montgomery on the other side and his cross is met by the head of McCallum, who nods it into the net.

067

Janczyk ran the game for Penicuik and McCallum looks fit and hungry after the injury problems he had last season. Ross looks like he should be playing at a higher level.

Vale had a lot more fight about them since I saw them at Tranent, but suffered from only turning up with 11 players. (Substitute Taylor arrived late).

Saturday 1 August 2015, Pennypit Park

The opening day of the Lowland League finds us at Preston Athletic against Gala Fairydean Rovers in Prestonpans.

DSC07893

Preston Athletic were founded in 1945, and were originally a junior club, only entering the senior ranks in 1994, when they joined the East of Scotland Football League.

They took over the pitch vacated by the recently defunct Prestongrange Rovers upon their inception, but moved in 1950 to one vacated by Thorntree United. The club was made up almost entirely by the local mining community and in the early 1960s the nearby Colliery was closed and they were on the move again and this time settled at its present home, Pennypit Park. The park was built on the site of the former Penny Pit, one of the oldest mines in the area, although by this time fewer of the Club players were miners.

The Club turned Senior in 1994 and joined the East of Scotland Football League. A year later they applied for and were accepted as a member of The Scottish Football Association.

They became the first team from East Lothian to play in the Scottish Cup in 2002, when they lost 1-0 to Hamilton Accies and have featured several more times since then.

It’s an ambitious club and they have three times applied to join the Scottish Football League, but have been unsuccessful. They were one of the original members of the Lowland League.

DSC07812

Gala Fairydean Rovers FC was first formed in 1894. They split in 1907 to form Gala Fairydean and Gala Rovers. Both clubs ceased operations in 1914 due to the outbreak of the First World War, with Fairydean resuming in 1919. Gala Rovers were only reformed in 1947. Construction of the main stand at Netherdale took place in 1964 and is a listed building.

The two clubs merged to form Gala Fairydean Rovers FC in 2013 and became founder members of the Lowland League.

Gala Fairydean applied to join the Scottish Football League in 1966, 1994, 2000 and 2002, but were unsuccessful on each occasion. They also feature regularly in the Scottish Cup.

Preston have made a number of new signings during the close season under new manager Colin Jack. Goalkeeper Flockhart, defenders McSherry, Moffat, Morrison and Porcher, former Hibs midfielders Andrew Gilchrist and Jamie Beaton, James Martin formerly of Hamilton Accies. As well as Andy Jones, Gary Nicholson and Nick Coull.

Kudos to Preston Athletic who have really tidied up the stand from when I visited last season. Although I’m not sure how cosy it’s going to be, sitting on metal benches in the cold winter months…I may need to remember to take a cushion next time.

DSC07814

Gala’s Thomson plays the ball into the box in 3 minutes and Porcher heads it behind for a corner. Burdett crosses to the back post where Aitchison tries a volley. He miscues it and it comes to the edge of the box where Bonnar slams the ball into the bottom corner to give Rovers the early lead.

DSC07818

Preston win a corner in the 8th minute and Beaton swings it into the back post where he finds Morrison, but his header is wide.

In the next minute, a ball over the top finds Gala’s Jardine racing through on the keeper. He slides the ball past Flockhart, but it rolls just wide of the post.

Martin tries a shot for Preston in 11 minutes but Stephen manages to block and takes the sting out of it, making it easy for Wilson.

DSC07821

Preston have a couple of promising attacks down the left, but disappointing crosses on both occasions.

Gala’s Jardine has a strike from outside the box in 18 minutes, but it whistles past the post.

Coull is caught in possession by Bonnar in 19 minutes and he quickly passes to Gala team mate Aitchison, but Flockhart manages to turn his shot round the post for a fruitless corner.

Thomson gets the ball for Gala and plays it to Gibson with 23 minutes gone, who is around 25 yards from goal. Gibson chips the ball up and volleys it towards goal. Flockhart throws himself at the ball and manages to get a hand to it and the ball comes back off the bar. Would have been some goal.

In 27 minutes, Burdett holds up the ball for Gala and lays it off to Stephen whose cross is turned behind by McSherry. The corner drops in the middle of the Preston box and everyone watches as the ball bounces wide.

Preston come forward in 33 minutes and Todd plays it wide for McSherry. Todd gets on the end of the cross, but his shot is blocked. It comes back to Gilchrist, but he curls his shot well wide.

DSC07836

Gala’s Galbraith is caught in possession at the back by Martin in 35 minutes, but he gets back to block after Guiney holds Preston up.

Gilchrist gets to the by-line in 42 minutes, but there are none of his Preston teammates to latch onto his ball across goal.

A minute before half time Gibson tests the Preston keeper again, but he manages to turn the ball behind.

Preston’s Todd does well on the by-line in 49 minutes, but can’t find anyone in the middle and the chance is gone.

A good through ball by Jardine sets Gibson away for Gala in 51 minutes, but Flockhart is out quickly.

Jardine is there again in 52 minutes and he expertly flicks the ball over the last defender’s head, then conspires to miss the ball completely when he tries to volley.

DSC07861

A good run down the right by Gibson gives Gala another opportunity in 54 minutes, but his good ball into the box doesn’t find any takers.

Some excellent build up play by Gala in 55 minutes ends with Thomson crossing into the box to the head of Aitchison, who nods past the keeper to put Gala two up.

DSC07866

Gala attack again in 56 minutes with Jardine down the right, who leaves Morrison for dead, but his cross into the box just eludes Gibson.

More good attacking play by Gala in 58 minutes with a great run from Burdett who finds Jardine and they win a corner. The corner is cleared to the edge of the box where Galbraith strikes for goal. The ball takes a deflection, giving Flockhart no chance as the ball flies in to the net for three nil.

DSC07876

Great pace by Gala’s Jardine down the right in 65 minutes sees him get away from the defence, but Gibson can’t get on the end of the cross.

The crowd are being tormented by the music from an ice cream van, which seems to have been going through the streets around the ground for the duration of the match.

DSC07881

In 74 minutes, Morrison tries to push into Aitchison as the Gala player drives in to the box. Morrison falls over as he tries this and inexplicably, gets a free kick.

With ten minutes left, Preston’s number 12 tries a shot from around 22 yards, but Wilson saves comfortably.

DSC07902

The game ends without further incident and it’s an impressive start to the season for Fairydean Rovers.

DSC07903

Gibson looked a real handful up front, ably assisted by Jardine. Noble used the ball well in midfield and Guiney was a rock at the back. Preston huffed and puffed and will improve on this once the new team starts to gel.

Tuesday 4 August 2015, New Dundas Park

A final pre-season match with a late change. Edinburgh United were supposed to be at home to Bonnyrigg Rose, but that was cancelled, so tonight sees Bonnyrigg Rose at home to Easthouses Lily.

Bonnyrigg Rose were founded in 1881 from the remnants of Bonnyrigg Swifts. Their home ground is New Dundas Park, where they have been since 1953 and they traditionally play in red and white hoops. They have won the Junior Cup twice, in 1966 and in 1978, as well as finishing runners-up in 1972

They’ve had some notable former players, including Hibs legend Pat Stanton, from Spurs 1961 double winning side John White and future actor Sean Connery. (Yes that one). The locals do have a bit of a Bond with their side.

Easthouses Lily were originally formed in 1950 and competed in the East Region Junior leagues, but folded in 1965. In 1969 they reformed and began life as members of the Scottish Welfare Football Association. They joined the East of Scotland Football Association in 1981 and played at Murray Park. When the owners of the land sold the ground they moved nearby to their current ground at Newbattle Complex.

They changed the name to Easthouses Lily Miners Welfare Football Club in 1989 and had a fair bit of success in the 1990s and 2000s.

The club have now come full circle and resigned from the East of Scotland League and re-joined the Juniors for this season.

Probably Lily’s most famous player was goalkeeper Willie Duff who signed for Heart of Midlothian in 1952 and went on to win a Scottish Cup and a League Cup winners’ medal. He later played for Dunfermline Athletic and helped them reach the European Cup Winners Cup Semi-Final in 1969.

Rose have been banging the goals in so far and have beaten Civil Service Strollers 7-0, Shettleston Juniors 4-0 and Tranent Juniors 4-1, all away from home, before beating Falkirk Juniors 6-0 at home. The Lily have played other local sides and have beaten Dalkeith, drawn with Arniston and lost to Musselburgh.

Rose manager Robbie Horn had a very busy summer. With Roseburgh and McLeish off to Musselburgh, he signed keeper Billy Bald from Berwick Rangers, Whitehill Welfare’s striker Wayne McIntosh and captain Andrew Kidd, Kieran McGachie and Chris Tobin from Civil Service Strollers, defender Ewan Moyes of Montrose, Adam Nelson (ex Elgin, Brechin, Musselburgh and Linlithgow ), and Lewis Turner (ex Newtongrange , Berwick, and Musselburgh).

It’s probably the first time I’ve watched two teams with a different flower in their name since I saw Partick Thistle against those Hibs pansies. (Sorry Hibs fans).

DSC07910

Lily are quickly out of the traps and in 2 minutes Russell crosses from the right and the ball is cleared off the line.

Hoskins is dispossessed by Lily’s McQueenie in the 4th minute, but his cross is cleared.

Rose have their first attack in 5 minutes with Hoskins passing to McGachie, who finds Horne, who shoots for goal, but it’s gathered comfortably by Hay.

Bonnyrigg’s sloppy start at the back continues when a poor pass out from keeper Bald is intercepted in 9 minutes before Archibald brings down the attacker in the box for a penalty. A great chance for the underdogs to take the lead. Russell takes but Bald redeems himself saving well down to his right.

DSC07922

Hoskins has a chance for Rose in 13 minutes as the ball drops to him in the box, but his shot is deflected just wide.

In the next minute, Kidd send a looping ball into the Lily box which Hay pushes over the bar. The corner finds Hoskins at the back post, but he can’t direct his effort on target.

A good ball forward by Rose’s Kidd is worked back to Turner whose shot come off the base of the post in 17 minutes.

A late tackle by McManus on Kidd gives Rose a free kick in 21 minutes and the flag goes up for offside as Nelson’s ball is headed over by Hoskins.

The Lily offside trap is sprung in 23 minutes and McGachie and Turner are clean through with no defenders in sight. McGachie calmly slots past the keeper to give Rose the lead.

DSC07929

In 26 minutes, M Brown brings down Gray from behind to give Rose a free kick about 22 yards from goal. Hoskins strikes the free kick well, which is acrobatically saved by Hay.

Lily break quickly in 30 minutes, with Robertson playing the ball wide to Russell, but his cross is hit too hard.

Turner does well to win the ball for Rose in 34 minutes and he plays it wide to Kidd. He strides forward and from just outside the box, hammers the ball past the keeper to double the lead.

DSC07939

A quick turn and shot by Turner in 36 minutes is deflected wide for a Rose corner which Nelson swings over. The ball is headed back to Turner whose shot flashes just wide.

Turner is involved again in 41 minutes when he sets up McGachie on the edge of the box, who powers the ball into the net for 3-0.

DSC07960

Just before half time Nelson floats a free kick into the Lily box, which is met by the head of Moyes, but he can’t direct it on target.

Lily started the game well and it may have been different if they had scored the penalty, but Rose are looking strong now. Turner has been excellent for Bonnyrigg on the left, with McGachie holding the ball up well. Kidd is looking strong in midfield. C Brown is excelling up front for Lily and working very hard.

Lily break quickly from a Rose corner in 50 minutes and the ball is played into the box for sub Scott, but the ball bobbles as he strikes it and it sails over the bar.

C Brown has moved to right back for Lily in the second half.

Some great build up play by Lily in 56 minutes as M Brown passes to Scott, who finds Russell, but Bald makes a great save denying what would have been a great goal. The keeper punches the resultant corner from Bennett clear.

DSC07987

C Brown strides forward for Lily in 58 minutes and is brought down on the edge of the box by Archibald. Stewart takes the free kick, but it goes wide.

A bad pass back by Lily’s Campbell in 61 minutes is intercepted by Turner who runs on and rifles into the bottom corner for Bonnyrigg’s fourth.

With 67 minutes on the clock, Nelson sends a free kick into the box where Moyes sends a thumping header into the net off the underside of the bar to make it five.

DSC07999

Rose seem to be unstoppable at the moment and in 71 minutes, Hoskins runs along the by-line and cuts it back to Turner who sweeps the ball into the net for number six.

DSC08003

It only takes another five minutes for Rose to score again.   Turner anticipates another pass back and rolls it past Hay to make it four goals in fourteen minutes.

DSC08008

Lily manage a consolation in 82 minutes when Shearer takes a free kick from the corner of the box and finds Elliott at the back post who heads in to make it 7-1.

Despite the 7.15 kick off, it’s starting to get properly dark now.

Hoskins plays Turner in for Rose in 86 minutes, but the keeper blocks his shot.

In 88 minutes, Lily’s C Brown has a go at goal from 30 yards and it spins off Moyes for a corner. Bennett meets the ball at the back post, but his effort is deflected and Bald saves.

DSC07952

Rose continue to bang the goals in which can only be a good sign before the action starts for real. They seem to have a good squad in place. A tough night for Lily who won’t play anyone of this standard in the league this year. They showed enough in flashes to suggest that they have some decent players.

Saturday 8 August 2015

Despite me being one of the few locals who does go to see shows in the Edinburgh Fringe, the weekend tends to be too busy, so it’s away from Edinburgh this afternoon to see the Scottish Premiership clash between Dundee and Hearts.

Dundee were promoted to the top league at the end of the 2013-14 season and finished a creditable 6th in their top half finish last season, never being troubled with the threat of relegation.

Hearts all conquering Championship side of last season are back in the top league again this season hoping to do what Dundee did and finish in the top half.

Both teams won in the opening league fixtures the week before, Dundee with a thumping 4-0 win at Kilmarnock, while Hearts edged out St Johnstone at Tynecastle in a 4-3 thriller.

Dundee start the season without the departed Iain Davidson, Jamie Reid, David Clarkson, Paul Heffernan, Kyle Benedictus, Willie Dyer and Kyle Letheren. Coming in are Kane Hemmings from Barnsley, Kevin Holt from Queen of the South, keeper David Mitchell from Stranraer, Julen Etxabeguren Leanizbarrutia from East Fife, Nick Ross from Inverness Caley Thistle, Nicky Low from Aberdeen , Rory Loy from Falkirk and Daryll Meggatt from Alloa Athletic.

Hearts have been equally busy with Danny Wilson, James Keatings, Dale Carrick, Scott Robinson and Jason Holt all leaving. Coming in are Polish defender Blazej Augustyn, Gavin Reilly from Queen of the South, Spanish striker Juanma Delgado, Brazilian defender Igor Rossi and Nigerian international left back Juwon Oshaniwa.

Dundee make two changes from last week. McPake returns from suspension with Konrad dropping to the bench, with McGowan coming in for the injured Loy. Hearts make one change with Oshaniwa replacing Nicholson. Ozturk is playing in front of defence for Hearts in quite a departure from their usual formation.

DSC08043

Hearts have an early penalty appeal turned down when Walker seems to be bundled over from behind in the box, but the referee waves away the appeals.

Hemmings got the game’s first shot on target after four minutes after showing delightful skill to get away from Igor Rossi, but Neil Alexander made a smart block and Oshaniwa cleared behind for a corner.

Dundee have come flying out of the blocks though and in 4 minutes, McGinn picks out Hemmings who controls the ball well and strides forward past Rossi before firing at goal. Alexander does well to get a hand to the shot and Oshaniwa clears it behind.

DSC08047

From the corner, Stewart plays it short to McGowan, who gives him it back. He then chips the ball into the box where Hemmings, completely unmarked, rises and heads the ball into the corner of the net to give the home side an early lead.

Dundee are knocking the ball about well and Hearts haven’t got into the game, but they have a great chance for the equaliser in 13 minutes. Buaben’s cross is cushioned by Juanma into the path of Walker who has a great chance, but Bain does well to block from close range and Walker heads the follow up over the bar.

DSC08052

A minute later and Dundee almost get their second. Hemmings charging into the left side of the box before laying it on a plate for McGowan at the back post, but Alexander somehow gets across to block the shot and the defence manages to clear.

DSC08053

In 18 minutes, Harkins plays a one-two with Stewart and has a great chance for Dundee, but he can only hit the side netting.

McPake has a headed chance in 21 minutes, but the Hearts defence manages to block.

Hearts are finally getting a foothold in the game as the half develops and are getting more of the ball.

DSC08060

Dundee force a couple of corners and from the second one in 35 minutes, Harkins has a chance, but his header is too high.

Hearts have a great chance to get on level terms in 38 minutes after a Walker corner comes across to the other side. Ozturk swings the ball back into the box and finds Juanma right in front of goal, but he somehow manages to head wide when it seemed easier to score.

Hemmings almost grabs a second for the home side in 42 minutes when a cross by Ross is almost turned in by Hemmings at the near post, but Rossi gets across to block.

DSC08074

Right on half time, a Harkins cross to the back post is met by the head of Holt, but Alexander is down well to save his side again.

Dundee will be disappointed to only be one in front at half time after a good start and Alexander has kept Hearts in the game. Hearts came more into the game as the half progressed and had two great chances during the half.

Hearts reorganise their defence for the second half with Ozturk back in the middle of defence, Rossi going to left back and Oshaniwa going further forward into midfield.

Walker looks to get Hearts on the front foot straight away at the start of the second half and his delightful cross is just beyond the reach of Oshaniwa inside the six yard box.

DSC08077

In 56 minutes, a Hearts corner comes to Ozturk at the back post and he lobs the ball into the middle where Paterson’s header comes off the arm of McPake and Thomson awards a penalty. Juanma, taking the opportunity to rectify his first half miss, sends Bain the wrong way from the spot to grab the equaliser.

Juanma comes forward for Hearts again in 63 minutes and is tackled at the edge of the box. Several players try to regain possession and the ball breaks from Walker back for Juanma who races into the box and skillfully steps inside the challenge of Etxabeguren before curling the ball past Bain to give the visitors the lead to the delight of the 2,316 Hearts fans in the crowd of 8,222.

DSC08092

Hearts have got a stranglehold on midfield in the second half and the Dundee players are not finding the time on the ball they did in the first half.

A deep cross by McGinn in 65 minutes is met by the head of Holt at the back post, but Paterson manages to block the header.

DSC08103

Harkins runs into the box in 68 minutes and goes down as he is met by Ozturk, but the referee waves away the claims for a penalty.

Tempers between the players are starting to flare and the bookings are piling up.

DSC08116

Hearts are controlling the game now and Dundee are no longer threatening.

Hearts sub Reilly intercepts a loose ball at the back on the edge of the box in 83 minutes and gives it to Walker who cuts inside the defender well, but his shot is straight at Bain.

DSC08126

An excellent first half by Dundee when they should have been out of sight at the end of 45 minutes. Hearts came right back into the game in the second half and looked comfortable once they were in front.  Strange that Dundee didn’t make any substitutions during the course of the game.

Full Time: Dundee 1 Hearts 2.
