Saturday 1 November 2014, Prestonfield Park

1027

Scottish Cup third round day and I head to West Lothian to take in the clash between East Superleague Linlithgow Rose and Championship side Raith Rovers.

We’re through early on the train and there seems to be a real buzz about the town with everyone talking about the game.

After a good start in the league, Rovers have lost a bit of form recently, but are still challenging near the play-off spots.  Rose didn’t have the best of starts but are now starting to come good.

Despite it being more than double the usual price to get into Prestonfield, there are around 2,250 in attendance and it’s a great atmosphere as the teams kick off at two minutes past 3.

1044

Rose attack straight from the kick off and good passing ends with Smith curling an effort at goal which McGurn collects comfortably.

Raith get a corner after 2 minutes after Anderson’s shot is deflected wide, but McKinven catches it well.

In the 8th minute, a fabulous jinking run from MacLennan sees him get to the byline and he drives the ball low and hard across the face of goal, but no Rose player can get a  touch, with Coyne the nearest.

1057

A minute later, MacLennan was to the fore again, receiving a pass from Strickland on the edge of the box, before beating a defender and sending a shot inches wide with McGurn a spectator.

Raith certainly knew they were in a game now.

Thomson comes forward for Rovers in the 10th minute and his cross is headed behind for a corner which comes to nothing.  He tries again two minutes later, but this time his cross is too high.

A lung bursting run from Smith sees him get all the way to the edge of the Rovers box and his shot is well saved by McGurn down to his left after 15 minutes.

MacLennan is back in the action again with another good run in the 16th minute, but this time his shot is weak.  He and Batchelor are running the show for the home side who are playing some lovely football.

Scott brings down MacLennan on the edge of the box with a bad challenge in the 23rd minute and McGurn makes a fantastic save low to his left to turn the ball round the post from Strickland’s free kick.

1088

Coyne wins a header from a Rose corner in 26 minutes, but it’s too high.  The junior side are well on top but can’t seem to get that all important goal.

You can tell it is a big game today as I see Buckfast and whisky being drunk in the crowd.

With 28 minutes gone, MacLennan comes forward again following a Rovers corner after Smith cleared it and he plays in Strickland, but his shot is saved by McGurn.

Rovers make a quick break forward in the 29th minute, but Stewart’s cross is poor with an unmarked player at the back post.  A warning for Rose.

On the half hour mark, Anderson comes forward for Rovers and plays a one-two with Scott before taking aim from 25 yards, but his powerful effort is too high.

With a minute to half time, Smith’s cross is blocked, but his second effort finds the feet of Strickland in the box, whose first time effort leaves McGurn looking on anxiously as the ball ends up on just the wrong side of the post for Rose once again.

1111

Conroy and McGurn have been the best for Raith and Scott is using his physique in the middle of the park, but they have very much played second fiddle to a fantastic first half performance from the home side.  Raith have had no answer to MacLennan’s skills and he and Batchelor have completely controlled the midfield, with Smith looking dangerous on the wing.  How Rose haven’t scored is a major surprise as the half time whistle blows.

Rose start the second half as they finished the first, with a great crossfield ball from Nelson finding Coyne, who beats a defender before three more converge on him.  He gets the shot away, but it doesn’t have enough power to trouble the keeper.

Conroy send in a dangerous free kick in the 48th minute, but Coyne heads it behind for a corner which comes to nothing.

A lovely bit of skill from MacLennan on the half way line sees him running towards goal again in 50 minutes, but he is cynically taken out by Perry, who is booked.  The kick is taken short to Coyne, but his shot is blocked.

1123

MacLennan continues to feature as he turns quickly in 51 minutes, but his shot is high and wide.  Two minutes later, he is in the thick of the action again as he turns Fox inside out on the edge of the box, but his pass just eludes Strickland.

Rovers gain a corner in 55 minutes and Conroy’s corner is powerfully met by Watson, but it’s straight at McKinven.

Rose get a couple of corners, but they come to nothing.

In the 67th minute, as a Rose move breaks down, Elliot finds Scott in the centre circle who plays it wide to Stewart.  He brings the ball into the box and as he reaches the goal line, Thom’s challenge sees him go down and the ref awards a penalty.  Conroy steps up and puts it in the keeper’s bottom left hand corner.  An undeserved lead for Rovers.

1142

Rose try to hit back quickly with Coyne, who seems to be playing too far out left to get properly involved, trying a shot from the edge of the box, which goes out for a throw on the other side.

The Rovers fans aren’t happy when Stewart is taken off in the 73rd minute, with Vaughan coming on to replace him.

A Rose corner in the 74th minute is cleared and then headed back into the penalty area by O’Byrne.  Smith shows fabulous control to bring it down in a crowded penalty area, but his shot is just wide.

A blow for Raith in 78 minutes as the influential Conroy goes off injured.

Scott’s good first half for Rovers is not replicated in the second half, with a succession of passes failing to find their mark.  Linlithgow are still having a lot of possession, but the chances are not coming like they were before.

With 5 minutes left, Vaughan’s corner for Raith is headed into the same bottom corner by the unchallenged Watson to put Rovers two up.  A great header.

1154

Almost immediately, Elliot almost makes it three, but his chip goes just wide.  Then Watson gets on the end of another corner, but this time he can only head wide.

In the last minute, Vaughan find himself through with just the keeper to beat and dinks it over him, but McKillen gets back to clear acrobatically and prevent the scoreline looking even more convincing.  It would have been very harsh on the home side.

1078

Rovers will be pleased to be through to the next round, but Rose were by far the better team and have a lot to be proud of.  You have to put the ball in the net.

Tuesday 4 November 2014, New Victoria Park

The lure of Newtongrange on a cold Tuesday night proved to be too much for me and I am in position to watch Hearts Under 20s take on Dundee Under 20s in the Development League.  It’s the smallest crowd I’ve seen for one of these games, so not everyone felt the same.  Champions League football on TV and a cold night may have been contributing factors to only around 60 being in attendance.  The players would have been pleased to see the first team managers of both teams there though, with Robbie Neilson and Paul Hartley also joined by Craig Levein and Hearts player Dale Carrick.

Interested to see David Doig, who seems to be the referee at every junior game I go to running the line.

Dundee have Dyer, Kerr, Davidson, McBride and Roberts in the team tonight, all of whom have played first team football this season, while Hearts have first teamers McHattie, McKay, Robinson and Holt starting.

009

It’s a cagey opening period with both teams probing for openings.  The wee Hearts team have been conceding a lot of early goals in home fixtures in recent games, so they will be looking to prevent this happening again.

The seventh minute sees Skelly receiving lengthy treatment after he came off second best in a 50/50 challenge with Hearts Smith.  He tries to carry on but is replaced after 15 minutes.

Roberts has a good run down the wing for Dundee in the 18th minute, but his cross is safely held by Gallacher.

Buchanan charges down a clearance by Dundee in the 22nd minute and the ball falls to Flanagan, but he shoots straight at Schenk.

017

In the 24th minute, McHattie is caught in possession in his own half and Roberts gets to the goal line, but his cut back is cleared to safety by Smith.

Beith hits a great strike at goal in the 26th minute, but Schenk manages to get something in the way of the ball to prevent Hearts from taking the lead.  A minute later, Holt squares the ball to Roy, but his shot is deflected over by Black.

Beith’s passing is impressive, but twice he seems to shirk out of challenges where he had a chance of winning the ball.

The 33rd minute sees some good wing play by Roy, but his efforts come to nothing and he is limping afterwards.

Gemmell plays the ball wide to Cameron in the 34th minute, but the Dundee player’s cross is headed behind.  From the resultant corner, the ball is half cleared to Dyer, whose dangerous cross is put behind for another corner which proves to be fruitless.

Roberts is proving to be a real threat with his pace and control and is certainly the danger man for Dundee.

Good play by Dundee in 39 minutes sees a chance created for Lamond, but Gallacher manages to block with his feet.

With three minutes to half time, Beith miscontrols the ball in midfield and in his attempt to retrieve the situation, he fouls.  Not a good moment for him as he is booked and limping afterwards and is replaced at half time.  A poor first half.

022

A corner from Roberts in the first minute of the second half causes panic in the Hearts box when it is headed downwards by Colquhoun, but Hearts manage to scramble the ball clear.

The play isn’t improving on the fare served up in the first half, and those under the covered enclosure have the welcome relief of what looks like a short fireworks display, that can be seen through the trees, which seems to have drawn everyone’s attention.

McKay and Gordon are looking quite solid as a defensive pairing at the back tonight for Hearts, but their distribution has left a lot to be desired.

A mishit cross from McHattie in 59 minutes almost catches Dundee out as it reaches Flanagan on the edge of the box, but he doesn’t catch the shot well enough and it’s easy for the keeper.

A Dundee cross to the back post in 61 minutes is headed behind by Smith and looked very close to being an own goal.

025

Colquhoun is looking impressive for Dundee in midfield while Robinson is effective for Hearts in the same area, passing the ball well and usually doing the simple thing.

Roberts is starting to lose his temper and pushes a Hearts player away, but is not penalised for it.

Dundee’s experienced players in defence are not giving the youthful Hearts forwards much of a sniff in front of goal, but it’s a similar story at the other end for Dundee’s forwards.

In 82 minutes, a Dundee break down the right ends with a powerful effort from Black which Gallacher does well to turn round the post.  As the clock ticks down Gallacher manages to turn the ball over the bar from a great Davidson strike as Dundee finish in the ascendancy, but there are to be no goals tonight.

026

Certainly not the best of games, but Hearts will be pleased with a clean sheet for a change.

Saturday 8 November 2014, Tynecastle Park

Edinburgh today to see the Championship clash between Hearts and Raith Rovers.

Although Hearts’ form has started to look a bit shaky recently, they are still top of the league and unbeaten, with their last game being the closest they have come to losing that record until Alim Ozturk’s stunning 40 yard thunderbolt at local rivals Hibs right at the death to snatch a draw.

003

Rovers have gone 5 league games without a win and will need to improve considerably on last week’s showing at Linlithgow to have any chance of taking something from the game.

This is the game closest to Remembrance Sunday and Hearts and Raith Rovers have special reasons to commemorate the centenary of the beginning of the great war.

Those playing professional football at the time were being called cowards.  While soldiers were dying on the western front, people were playing and watching football and some felt that was not appropriate. So players were under pressure to do something.

Heart of Midlothian comfortably led the top league in Scotland at the time the war broke out. Sixteen players from Heart of Midlothian enlisted along with around 500 Hearts supporters.  They were followed by seven Raith Rovers players, six Falkirk players, and other smaller groups from Hibs, Dunfermline and East Fife.

The players joined up with McCrae’s Battalion, the name given to the 16th (Service) Battalion of the Royal Scots, raised from volunteers in 1914.  Seven Hearts players and three Rovers players made the ultimate sacrifice.

On Remembrance weekend, the Scottish Professional Football League ensured both sides would meet, with both teams wearing special shirts for the occasion and the Band of the Royal Scots Associations play in a pre-match performance.

After the teams had come onto the pitch, a lone piper played an emotionally charged ‘Flowers of the Forest’ followed by an impeccably observed minutes silence by the 16,372 in attendance.

073

I’m surprised to see Conroy on the bench for Rovers, as I thought he was their best player against Linlithgow.  He is one of two changes they make, with Moon and McKay coming into the starting line up in place of Stewart and Conroy.  Nade is also on the bench, returning from injury.

Hearts have Paterson suspended and captain Wilson and Osman Sow injured.  They are replaced by McGhee, McKay and Walker.

Hearts are looking to start strongly and Walker beats McKeown before hitting his shot into the side netting after only two minutes.

079

With just 4 minutes on the clock, King finds Ozturk around the half way mark.  Ozturk begins to stride forward with the ball and with most of Tynecastle urging him to “shoot” after his effort in the previous game, he obliges from 30 yards.  The ball moves about considerably in the air, but McGurn, who had played so well the previous week, should have saved it.  Instead, he manages to dive underneath the ball and it hits the back of the net for the hosts to take the lead.

086

This must be the first time in the history of world football that someone who has scored from miles out is encouraged to shoot the next time he gets the ball and actually scores.

The thirteenth minute sees Walker fouled 25 yards from goal by Perry and the Hearts fans shout for Ozturk to take it.  Although he hit it well enough, the ball arced wide of the target this time.

King is released in the corner of the box soon after for Hearts, but he overruns the ball when a better touch would have given him a great opportunity to increase the home side’s lead.

As the first half progresses, Raith are getting a foothold in the game and are starting to frustrate Hearts who are having a lot of possession, but not really creating anything.

Rovers created their first real opportunity on the half hour when Anderson’s cross is met by a looping back header from Watson, but it is just too high and hits the roof of the net.

093

In the 34th minute, Anderson flicked the ball to Watson but his shot was gathered easily by Alexander in the Hearts goal as Raith started to feature a little more.

Hearts were still on top though, and the 36th minute saw Walker feed El Hassnaoui at the edge of the box where he twisted past his marker, but his low shot was comfortably stopped by McGurn.

Two minutes later, Nicholson tried to split the defence with a through ball for Walker, but the ball didn’t hold up on the wet surface and McGurn was off his line quickly to gather.

In the 41st minute, Rovers got a free kick 30 yards from the Hearts goal, but Elliot’s well struck effort was too high to trouble the keeper.

Hearts looked comfortable in the first half and not in any real danger, but they had struggled to make opportunities for themselves.  Rovers would still have hope for the second half.

126

Hearts only waited 7 minutes into the second half before sending on Keatings for El Hassnaoui.  Keatings had scored a hat-trick in the game between the sides earlier in the season at Stark’s Park.  He didn’t take long to get involved, hitting a free kick just wide after 55 minutes.

Anderson looked to take a sore one in the Hearts box and the signal was made that he would have to come off.  He then made a Lazarus like recovery and played on.

A substitution each was made to try and alter the flow of the game, but Hearts were still dominating without looking too dangerous, with Rovers steadfastly refusing to give up on taking something from the game.

As the half progressed, Rovers came more into the game with the home side becoming increasingly nervous.  With 20 minutes to go, Fox sent a cross into the Hearts area, but Alexander was there to gather.

098

King tried to release some of the pressure when he let fly with a powerful effort, but Watson blocked the shot well.  Rovers were soon back on the attack and in 73 minutes, a free kick was headed towards goal by Elliot, but Alexander saved well.

Conroy came on for Rovers, who had been the most impressive player for me the previous week, and his corner in 77 minutes was headed wide by Perry.

Rovers were on top now, but not really creating, just as Hearts had done for the previous 70 minutes, but they were given real encouragement with 6 minutes to go when Eckersley had to go off injured with Hearts having already used their 3 subs.

Raith threw more players forward and Stewart almost pulled them level in the 88th minute when on receiving the ball from Thomson, his turn and shot from the edge of the box looked goalbound, but Alexander got down well to his right to smother.

129

There was time for one more chance for an equaliser in the last minute when Alexander miscued a clearance to Fox who let fly from around 35 yards but the keeper got back to catch acrobatically with a save that looked like one for the cameras.

The Jambos held on to stay unbeaten at the top of the League.

A much improved performance from Rovers who may have got something if they had approached the game with more confidence.  An off colour Hearts that would have been more than happy to win the game.

Fox and Watson impressed me most for Rovers with Gomis not having his greatest game for Hearts, but still looked great in possession and Alexander doing everything expected of him apart from that last minute scare.

Have to say I was amazed at some of the Hearts’ supporters getting on the team’s back.  Although everyone would love to see their team win well with great performances every week, this isn’t how football is.  The clown a few rows in front of me who was shouting at players to “get the ball forward!” with 3 minutes left as Hearts kept possession in their own half when they were a goal up and down to ten men, being a particularly ridiculous one.

Full Time: Hearts 1 Raith Rovers 0

Saturday 15 November 2014, Carmuirs Park

With the Hearts game at Falkirk not kicking off until 5.30, I take the opportunity to make my first visit to Carmuirs Park to take in the game in the East Superleague between Camelon Juniors and Kelty Hearts, which kicks off at 1.45.

001

I’ve never been to Carmuirs Park before and it is a pretty big place, with capacity suggested to be 3,000.  There are around 160 here today.  It reminds me more of grounds from the West Superleague than the East, in the middle of a housing estate.

Camelon finished 5th last year in the Superleague with manager Danny Smith putting them on an upwards spiral, but he left in April to go to his former club Linlithgow Rose, with former Celtic player John Sludden taking over. They’ve been in the Superleague since their last promotion in 2005/6 and won the Juniors holy grail, the Junior Cup, in 1995.  A mixed season so far from Camelon.  They have done reasonably well against the top sides in the Division.  They’ve only lost once at home so far this season.  The previous weekend, they lost 3-0 at Penicuik, with all the goals scored in the first half.

Kelty are a young side, having been formed as recently as 1975 and have already made their way to the Junior Cup Final.  Twice.  They’ve been in the East Superleague since season 2006/7.  Kelty Hearts avoided relegation via the play-offs last year, beating Dalkeith Thistle convincingly over two legs.  I was there to see the second leg and they looked much better than their East Premier League opponents.  An almost whole new side for Kelty since last season and they have been flying this season.  Still unbeaten and sitting proudly at the top of the league after 10 games.

We are two minutes late kicking off from the set time of 1.45.  I’m not sure why.  Also sad to see that a Superleague game has no programmes on sale.

004

With three minutes gone, Kelty gain a throw on the right hand side, level with the 6 yard area.  Duffin throws it into the box and it goes over the head of the players at the front post.  Panic ensues in the home defence and with no danger whatsoever, Scott hammers the ball away from the goal but it hits his team mate Bell and flies back into the net to put Kelty in front.  It was going to be a hard enough game for Camelon, but this is a terrible goal to concede.

Kelty are looking to kill the game off early and a corner from C Courts sees Leighton head just over with the aid of a deflection after 7 minutes.

Camelon force their first corner in 9 minutes, but it comes to nothing.  They are finally getting a foothold in the game, but Kelty look a confident side and are knocking the ball about well.

There is an interesting looking structure behind one of the goals which looks to be in a garden in one of the surrounding houses.  It looks like an old school TV gantry and there are two people in it who seem to be drinking from cans of beer.  The perfect spot to watch the game.

023

The 18th minute sees a very hard challenge inside the Camelon box, which sees Cargill come off second best.  The referee gives a free kick to the home side although he could just as easily have given Kelty a penalty.

The tough tackling continues and Scott appeared to go into a tackle two footed with C Courts after 21 minutes and is perhaps lucky to get away with just a yellow card.

A tight offside decision sees the away fans giving the heavily tattooed linesman pelters, but he gives as good as he gets.

008

With 24 minutes gone, O’Reilly plays it wide to Duffin, who takes the ball on then cuts it back for O’Reilly, but the big forward misses his kick.

A minute later, Duffin plays a ball into the box and Cargill lets the ball drop over his shoulder and then hits a spinning volley into the far corner giving Clark in the Camelon goal no chance.  A fabulous goal for Kelty.

019

With 27 minutes gone, McLaren comes forward for Camelon after receiving a pass from M Wright and does well to hold off two defenders before he hits an effort from the edge of the box, but his effort is deflected just wide.  McLaren is trying hard, but he is too often isolated up front.

In the 34 minutes, a Kelty break sees O’Reilly with the ball at the edge of the box, but with supporting players either side, he tries to go on his own and loses possession.  A team mate is heard to shout “Craigie!  Pass the f’ing ball!”

With 36 minutes gone, a good passing move by the Fife Hearts ends with C Courts holding the ball up just outside the edge of the box, while he waits for the overlapping Greig.  He plays the ball into  the captain’s path and from a wide position in the box, he hits a ferocious strike first time into the top corner.  Another great goal for the away side and they now have a 3-0 lead.

029

Things continue to go from bad to worse for Camelon as the injured M Wright has to be replaced by Devlin with 4 minutes to half time.

Kelty have a chance to extend their lead with 2 minutes to half time when Duffin’s cross is headed at goal by Morrison, but there isn’t enough power on it to trouble the keeper.

So for the second week in a row, Camelon find themselves 3 goals down at half time and with a mountain to climb in the second half.  As well as McLaren, the spindly legged Stevenson has had a decent first half for the home side.

013

At half time, there are no pies left.

Kelty have looked impressive, with goalscorers Greig and East Superleague top scorer Cargill standouts.

O’Reilly is fouled 25 yards out in the 47th minute and takes the free kick himself, but his curling effort doesn’t curl enough and Kelty remain 3 in front.

Camelon break quickly in the 51st minute and substitute Devlin’s cross is just behind Stevenson.

Another crunching tackle between Camelon’s Scott and Kelty’s Grady sees Grady getting a sore one in 52 minutes and the crowd can hear him crying out in pain, but no action is taken by the ref.  Scott seemed to catch him with both feet.  There’s certainly some pretty hefty challenges taking place.

059

With 58 minutes gone, a Camelon corner comes all the way across to the other side and Ure crosses back into the box where Stevenson heads just wide.

In the 61st minute, G Wright shows great feet on the edge of the box and is brought down by Greig.  Devlin is too high with the free kick.

The home side are having a real go now, but it’s hard to tell if Kelty have dropped down a gear with a big lead to protect.

With 65 minutes gone, Camelon get the goal they have been threatening.  Kelty have more than one opportunity to clear their lines, but eventually the ball is worked out wide to McLaren, whose cross is sent into the net by Stevenson’s diving header. 1-3.

052

Kelty look to restore their three goal lead and the ball is worked to Cargill on the edge of the box soon after the goal, but his effort is tame and easily collected by Clark.

Camelon’s tails are now up and Devlin is sent clean through in the 68th minute, but the pace of O’Neill comes to Kelty’s rescue and he gets back to take the ball off the forward.

The challenges are continuing to fly and a few players are getting involved in pushing matches and the referee will need to ensure the game doesn’t get out of hand.

O’Neill ruins his earlier good work by attempting a pass to the far side and managing to kick the ball clean out of the ground.  (Although there were at least 4 times the ball left the ground, this was by far the worst).

The almost inevitable red card isn’t long in coming though, when Donaldson catches substitute McCabe from behind with a scissors movement.  It didn’t look a particularly dangerous tackle, and certainly wasn’t the worst there had been, but he was never going to get the ball.  As there are only a couple of minutes left, it’s unlikely that it changed the result.

064

Fullerton comes forward with a minute left and hits a shot just past the far post with what would have been a consolation goal.

Right on full time, a Kelty break sees the ball worked to Grady and his powerful shot is well saved by Clark.

So a convincing win for the league leaders who eased off in the second half.  They never really looked like relinquishing their lead in the second half although it would have been interesting if Camelon had got a second.

It was difficult to find out the teams for this game with no tannoy, programme or teams listed on both teams websites or social media, so a big thank you to fans on the Pie and Bovril website for the info.  Apologies for not seeing who Kelty sub McCabe came on for.
