Thursday 1 January 2015. St James’ Park

Premiership clash today between Newcastle United and Burnley.  Almost didn’t make the game after a dodgy hot dog at the end of my Hogmanay night out in Newcastle meant I spent most of the morning and a large part of the afternoon in the train station toilet.  But you don’t want to hear about that.

Alan Pardew is in talks with Crystal Palace so will not be in the dugout for the home side this afternoon, with caretaker manager John Carver taking the team today.  After beginning December with a draw against today’s opposition and then beating Chelsea, United lost four in a row before winning 3-2 at home to Everton in their last outing.

Burnley continue to frustrate their supporters by losing games they think they should win, and often picking up points they wouldn’t expect.  After that opening draw in December, they’ve lost to QPR, beaten Southampton, lost narrowly to Spurs and Liverpool and most recently, came back from 2 down to draw at Manchester City.

173

Burnley are in the bottom three on goal difference, so will be looking for points today.  Newcastle are 9th and will be hoping to be looking up rather than down.

Vokes returns to the Burnley squad, but doesn’t make the bench.  They are also without Duff, and Taylor.  They name the same team for the sixth consecutive game.  Newcastle miss the suspended Cisse and Goalkeeper Krul and Elliot.

There are 51,761 in attendance, all hoping for a good start to the year for their team.

114

The match is still inside the first minute when Burnley almost grab the lead.  Ings plays the ball through for Barnes who hits the post from the centre of the box with the defence nowhere to be seen.

United have their first opportunity in 4 minutes, when Gouffran has a shot from just outside the box which Heaton manages to save.

Perez quickly has the next Newcastle opportunity, but his shot is too high.

A Newcastle corner in the 6th minute sees Gouffran’s shot blocked by Shackell and go behind for another corner, which comes to nothing.

Janmaat’s cross in 8 minutes finds Riviere in the middle of the box with a free header, but he can’t keep it down.

The home side continue to force the pace after their early scare and following another corner, Gouffran in 10 minutes and Sissoko in 12 minutes both have shots blocked.

The pressure pays off in the 15th minute when a Colback corner finds Taylor rising highest to nod into the bottom corner from close range.  It had been coming.

131

Burnley defender Shackell has picked up an injury following the goal and has to be replaced by Kevin Long, who makes his Premier League debut.

Arfield has a shot from distance which drifts wide in 17 minutes, as Burnley look for a way back into the game.

In 19 minutes, Newcastle undo all their good work when a long ball upfield is headed back by a home defender.  As the ball comes out of the sky, Dummett, with nobody near him, inexplicably manages to loop his backwards header past the stranded Alnwick in the home goal and the ball bounces into the net for an unlikely equaliser.

It was suggested that local boy Dummett is the only Geordie that doesn’t know where Alnwick is.

Barnes has an effort blocked with 23 minutes gone as Burnley look to build on their equaliser.

With 26 minutes gone, the Toon are back in front.  Colback receives a pass from Janmaat in midfield before striding forward and unleashing a low drive which goes right into the corner of the net to give Newcastle the lead once again.

141

More bad luck for Burnley when Marney has to go off with an injury in 32 minutes.  He is replaced by Kightly.

Astonishingly, Burnley have to make their final substitution in the 37th minute, when Long, who only came on 20 minutes earlier, is stretchered from the field.  Reid replaces him.

Reid goes to right back, with Trippier switching sides to the left and Mee goes to centre back.

Kightly has the last effort of the half, following a pass from Jones, but his injury time effort from outside the box is over the bar.

Burnley come close again right at the start of the half as a cross from Kightly is met by Boyd, but his shot is too high.

With the second half just three minutes old, Burnley must be starting to think it isn’t their day.  Ings finds space on the edge of the box and sends an excellent curling effort over Alnwick in the home goal.  The ball comes off the underside of the bar and bounces out.  Barnes reacts quickest and heads the ball back towards goal, where it hits the post.  An incredible escape.

As the Clarets continue to have the upper hand, Barnes plays the ball to Arfield, but his effort is blocked with 54 minutes gone.

Taylor’s run of bad luck with injuries continues when the Newcastle defender is forced off in 58 minutes to be replaced by Williamson.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen 4 players go off injured in a game before.  It certainly couldn’t be construed as a dirty match either.

165

Newcastle try to alter the flow of the game when Riviere, who had started the game well, is replaced by Armstrong in 59 minutes.

Burnley get a corner with 62 minutes on the clock and Jones swings the ball over where it is met by Mee, but his header comes crashing back off the bar.  If Burnley have been getting luck like this all season, it is no surprise that they are in the relegation zone.

It’s disappointing to see the highly rated Ings diving in the box in 64 minutes, but at least the Burnley striker is given a yellow card.

A magnificent long range effort from Boyd in the 65th minute looks like drawing Burnley level, but an equally good save from Alnwick turns the ball over the bar.

Burnley finally got the equaliser they deserved in the next minute, when a cross from Kightly is cleverly headed into the bottom corner by Ings to make it 2-2.

166

In 74 minutes, a cross by Boyd finds Barnes, who looks to give the away side the lead for the first time, but he fires wide.

Perez creates a rare chance for United in 78 minutes, but substitute Armstrong can only hit the ball wide of the target.

The home side though, got their noses back in front in 79 minutes completely against the run of play.  Good play by Perez created a chance for Armstrong, whose sliced effort fell perfectly into the path of Sissoko, who lashed the ball into the net.

176

The clarets still haven’t given up though, and a charge forward from Ings sees the ball run into the path of Boyd in 86 minutes and his shot just beat the despairing dive of Alnwick to make it three all.

179

Burnley almost snatched it right at the death, but Ings header doesn’t have enough to beat the keeper.  Nobody could have grudged them a winner.

An absorbing contest in which Burnley were hugely unfortunate not to win the three points.  Barnes, Boyd and Ings all stood out for a very attack minded side that were great to watch.  On another day, their many efforts that hit the woodwork may have gone in.  On this performance, they should have a good chance of staying up.

Newcastle must be worried about their inability to defend.  Especially losing Taylor to what is likely to be a lengthy injury.  They held the lead three times and couldn’t hold onto it.  Sissoko and Perez were their best players on the day, with Riviere also starting brightly.

A great match which I managed to get through to the end of, which hadn’t looked likely.

A cold January evening in Edinburgh to take in the Lowland League game between table topping Edinburgh City and Preston Athletic.

003

While City’s form shows no sign of abating in the league, and only a catastrophic collapse would result in them not being crowned champions, Preston’s season hasn’t gone as well as they might have hoped.

Athletic have shown signs of recovery recently, but those recoveries have ended as soon as they started.  The last four league results have typified this.  A first win of the season at home to bottom side Threave Rovers by 6-0, then losing by the same scoreline at Gretna, followed by a 2-0 loss at Edinburgh University, then a 2-0 win at Spartans.  That win at Spartans was on 6 December, the last time the weather has allowed them a game.

As well as not playing a competitive game for a while, Preston have a number of knocks and are missing a lot of players tonight, with Chris Cairney suspended and the three Hearts youngsters they had on loan, Aaron Scott, Liam Henderson and Alistair Roy, all returning to their parent club.

007

The first real incident of note comes in the 5th minute, when Gibson goes down in the Preston box, but his claims were waved away by the referee.

Allum comes forward for City in the 10th minute and tries his luck from outside the box.  Gibson looks unworried as the ball goes wide, but it looked closer than he made out from where I was sitting.

A minute later and City have a free kick 30 yards out.  Harrison steps up and hits a rocket which flies over the keeper’s head and into the net.  It may well have been wind assisted, and Gibson was probably too far off his line, but it was some strike.

Athletic almost create something in 15 minutes when a ball forward is flicked on by Martin, but Stobie is out quickly to gather before McIntyre can get there.

A great ball into the box by Deniran in the 16th minute sees two City players dive in, but neither can get the touch to turn the ball in.

Soon after, Deniran plays another good ball into the box which finds Allum unmarked at the back post, but his header isn’t great and Gibson gets down well to gather.

A period of scrappy play follows where the conditions are playing their part.

In 27 Minutes, Deniran plays a one-two with Gair which sees him clean through and he looks to have lost the chance making his mind up what to do, then turns and shoots and the ball deflects off defender Gibson and goes past keeper Gibson for City’s second.

023

With the away side’s heads starting to go down we only have to wait 2 minutes for another goal.  Gair’s corner is met by the head of Harrison, and the ball seems to trickle over the line past the helpless keeper.

With 32 minutes gone, Fergus goes into the book for going through the back of McFarland, who is soon replaced by Guthrie after succumbing to the injury.

City’s top scorer Allum doesn’t want to be left out and he finds the net in 38 minutes with a looping header after a cross from the left which seems to go through the keepers’ hands.

A minute later and there is yet another goal.  This time it’s for the away side though.  McIntyre shows good feet on the edge of the box and his shot hits the side netting.  The referee signals for a corner.  The same player manages to force home the corner to give Preston some hope.  Is an unlikely comeback on the cards?

No.  Straight from kick off, Gibson (the defender) heads a long clearance over his namesakes head in the Preston goal.  He and Deniran chase the ball and Deniran got the final touch, although it may have already been over the line.

There’s still time for Athletic to have another effort, O’Hara hitting a cracking drive from 25 yards, but it’s too high.

A 6 goal first half.  The second period will probably be awful.

039

The first minute of the second half and City are on the attack again.  Guthrie plays the ball wide in the box to Gibson (there are far too many Gibsons taking part) but the City player’s shot is high and wide.

The Athletic goalkeeper is very loud.  Constantly barking out instructions to his beleaguered defence, although he has to take the blame for some of the goals himself.

Allum tries to create something for City in 55 minutes when he plays the ball to Guthrie, but his shot is blocked.

Good build up play by Guthrie and Gibson for City in the 57th minute, but the latter can’t find a team mate in the box.

There’s an hour on the clock when Gair crosses low and hard into the box and Defender Gibson can only manage to deflect the ball into the path of Allum in the centre of the six yard box to tap home.

043

Allum is in search of his hat trick straight away as a long ball forward from Harrison finds the striker who tries a spectacular effort, but it’s wide of the goal.

And some more terrible defending by the Panners in 62 minutes sees a two against two for City, which ends in Allum failing to hit the target again.

A long range free kick from Harrison in 68 minutes is hit low and hard, but he can’t repeat his heroics in the first half as Gibson smothers.

O’Hara tries his luck from distance in 70 minutes, but there’s no joy for Athletic as it hits the side netting.

In 73 minutes, O’Hara makes a good interception and plays the ball forward for S Todd, but he is unable to control it when he would have been clean through.

Given the way the game has gone, Preston manager Kirk doesn’t seem to care about the unwritten law of not substituting when defending a corner, when he takes off L Todd, but the corner does come to nothing.

City almost seem to be lining up to score and in 82 minutes, Gibson makes a good save from Guthrie and he puts the rebound over the bar.  This came after a great block from defender Gibson when Allum was poised to net.

With three minutes left, City complete the scoring after some patient build up play ends with Deniran crossing for substitute Osborne shooting into the net.

So a cold and miserable wet and windy night which would have felt even worse for all those connected with Preston Athletic.  The home side was on top from the first whistle to the last and the score really could have been anything.  Some serious work to do for the Athletic defence.

Wednesday 14 January 2015, East Peffermill

The battle of the Universities in this evening’s Lowland League clash between Edinburgh University and Stirling University.

The home side haven’t played since 20 December, when they gained a 1-1 draw against the same opponents in the Lowland League Cup.  Stirling have had two games since then, a 2-0 loss at East Kilbride and an excellent 7-0 win at home to bottom of the table Threave Rovers the weekend before this game.

Both sides are likely to finish in mid table this season.

It’s Edinburgh to kick off and we begin with a complete miskick.  I wonder if this is a sign of things to come.

It’s a very windy and cold evening, and it’s a relief to be inside the covered area, although it still isn’t warm.

Edinburgh force a corner after 3 minutes and Sutherland takes it left footed, swinging into the goal.  Both keeper Marshall and Edinburgh’s Evans are close by, but it looks to go straight into the net to give the home side an early lead.

048

In 5 minutes, Sutherland puts another dangerous cross into the box, and Paterson gets a foot to the ball, but it goes wide.

Stirling show for the first time in 7 minutes, when Kessie receives the ball on the edge of the box and lays it off to Leigh, but his shot is wide.

There’s panic in the Stirling box as another Sutherland ball is swung in from a free kick after 13 minutes, making full use of the strong wind, which is eventually headed behind.

Geddes plays a one two with Leigh in 15 minutes, and is clean through on Tait, but the keeper manages to save with his feet.  Immediately after, Kessie plays the ball wide to Leigh, but his cross is cut out.

Leigh is involved in everything good for the away side.

The conditions are proving problematic for both sides with periods of play where both sides are giving the ball away.

In 27 minutes, Faulds strides forward for Stirling and has a go from 25 yards, but his effort is wide of the post.

Sutherland puts another free kick into the box and again Stirling struggle to cope with it, but manage to get a boot on the ball to divert it behind for a fruitless corner.

071

Stirling’s forward Geddes is prominent, but not due to his contribution to the match.  He seems to be complaining about everything.

With two minutes to half time, Faulds has a good effort from the edge of the box which is tipped over by Tait.  From the corner, Stirling force the ball into the net, but the whistle has gone for a foul on the keeper.

Right on half time, a long cross into the box by Burns from a free kick sees a crowd of players challenge for the ball, which drops to the feet of Kessie, who sweeps it into the net for the equaliser.

A timely leveller for the away side and they will be playing with the strong wind in the second half.

Straight from the kick off, Stirling are on the attack and Geddes tries his luck, but his low shot is smothered by Tait.

Kellock’s free kick for Stirling in the 50th minute is headed towards goal but comes off the back of a defender and goes out for a corner which comes to nothing.

056

Good play on the left by Stirling’s Kellock after an hour as he jinks past a couple of challenges and plays the ball inside to Geddes, but he miscontrols and the ball is cleared.

The game is being played in very poor conditions, but there isn’t much productivity on show. Leigh and Kellock look best for Stirling, with Kessie also looking a handful.  For Edinburgh, Daniels-Yeoman is competitive in midfield and those deliveries from Sutherland in the first half were impressive.

A good period of passing by the away side in 67 minutes ends with a cross from Kellock, which is well headed clear by MacFarlane.

Edinburgh almost go back in front in 72 minutes when Paterson plays the ball into the box with the outside of his foot looking for substitute Guthrie, but Marshall manages to get there first and holds on at the second attempt.

066

The commitment of Stirling’s Sheridan is impressive and he looks a wholehearted player.

In 73 minutes, a ball to the back post finds Stirling’s Geddes who looks certain to score, but Sutherland is there with a great last ditch tackle to save his team.

Edinburgh’s manager Dorian Ogunro and Stirling’s Shelley Kerr are on the opposite side of the pitch from the spectators, but Shelley is the only one that can be heard.  She really does have a loud voice.

094

With 75 minutes on the clock, Guthrie comes forward for Edinburgh, running at the defence.  He plays in Paterson, but Drummond is there to make a great block.

Leigh has an effort from distance in the 78th minute, but his shot is just wide.

In 79 minutes, Edinburgh take off Evans, who is replaced by number 17, who isn’t listed on any of the team lists.  And to think I’d been pleased to get the teams after not being able to on my last visit here!

As the game nears its end, Stirling are putting pressure on looking for a winner.  They come close with two minutes left when Tait comes out to catch the ball but misjudges it and the ball nearly goes in over his head.

In the last minute, Stirling get the ball in the net, but the flag is up.  As we move into extra time, Burns plays a deep ball into the Edinburgh box and Geddes gets there first, but Tait is there to preserve his goal.

110

A draw was probably fair over the 90 minutes on what was a filthy night.  Whitehill Welfare manager was sitting in front of us with some of his management team and he left just after half time and told them to text him the score.  You couldn’t really blame him given the conditions.

Full credit to both teams for making a game of it.

Saturday 17 January 2015, Newbyres Park

Scottish Junior Cup Saturday, but the inclement weather put paid to the whole card.  With games at Newtongrange and Rosewell both being called off, it is a bit of a surprise to find that the East Premier League game between Arniston Rangers and Montrose Roselea is to go ahead.  The only one of Midlothian’s seven senior and junior sides to have a home game that managed to beat the snow and ice.  (Dalkeith Thistle played in Fife against Oakley United).

It’s my first visit to see Arniston since pre-season, and they have themselves embroiled in a bit of a relegation battle.

Roselea are without the injured Mitchell, McDowell and Taylor.  Roselea are on a run of seven straight League wins and a win could see them go joint top in the Premier League.

113

There are about 90 in attendance, perhaps boosted by the cancellation of the other games, and there is a healthy support down from Montrose.

It’s pretty clear that this game isn’t on the TV, as the teams are not even out on the pitch when kick off is due to take place.  We end up kicking off 4 minutes late.

Kateleza wins the home side an early corner which is met by the head of Callaghan, but the ball is cleared off the line, goes straight up in the air and McLeod manages to push the ball away.

In the 3rd minute, another Arniston corner is once again won by Callaghan, but this time it clips the post and goes wide, although McLeod probably had it covered.

Reid is clean through for Montrose in the 5th minute with just the keeper to beat, but the flag goes up to halt his progress.

With 8 minutes gone, as Moriarty clears the ball, Montrose’s Reid catches him late.  Moriarty appears to attempt to stamp on him.  Both are lucky to have no action taken by the referee.

118

Kateleza rides a challenge on half way and plays the ball to Bauld on the edge of the box in 17 minutes.  He cuts inside and tries to lay it off, but a Montrose defender manages to get a foot in and the ball is cleared.

There’s a great cross from the goal line by Arniston’s Miller in 19 minutes, and Moffat is just about to head the ball home when Findlater manages to get a touch on the ball to take it away.

Kateleza threatens again in 21 minutes when he runs at goal from a wide position, but a last ditch challenge does enough to put him off and he can only shoot into the side netting.

121

Montrose’s Watson breaks clear and crosses for Reid in 23 minutes.  A defender leaves the ball for the keeper and he and Reid arrive at the ball at the same time.  The ball could have gone anywhere, but importantly for the home side, it doesn’t go in the net.

Arniston go straight up the other end and have a two against one.  Kateleza plays to Moffat, but in trying to control the ball, it bounces up and hits his arm.  A real chance gone.

The referee gets in the way to thwart the home side’s next attack, before Miller has a good strike from the edge of the box in 27 minutes, but it’s too close to McLeod.

Just past the half hour, Garden is short with a pass back and Watson is on to it in a flash.  The Montrose striker fires the ball at goal but is disappointed to see his effort come back off the bar.

In 35 minutes, Watson shoots from inside the box, but his effort is blocked.  The rebound falls to Rae for Montrose, but he hits it over the bar.

130

Included in the sizeable away support is a family that is standing beside us.  This includes two teenage girls who disappear for a spell in the first half, for what turns out to be a trip to the car to put some extra socks on.  It is a cold afternoon in Gorebridge.

With 39 minutes gone, Kateleza is put through, but the referee blows for offside.  It’s one of those afternoons in Junior football where there are no official linesmen, so the ref makes all the calls.  I think he may have got that one wrong.

The half time whistle sees the match still goalless.  The home side have shaded a hard fought game.

Arniston’s Miller and Kateleza have been impressive, while Findlater and Reoch have looked good for Montrose.

The second half is seven minutes old before the first incident of note, when the two young girls return from the warmth of the car heater.

In 53 minutes, a ball forward by Montrose is about to be cleared by Arniston defender Watson when the ball hits a divot and bounces over his foot.  Reid runs onto it and shoots straight at Cornet who can only parry the ball back to the striker who rounds the keeper and slots the ball into the empty net to give Roselea the lead.

154

Someone from the Montrose bench, which may well have been the manager shouts at what appeared to be his striker Watson – “If you don’t want to play, you can fuck off”.  Interesting man management.

A speculative effort from Rae in 55 minutes is just too high for Montrose.

In 56 minutes, Cruikshank has a good opportunity for the away side at the back post, but he spoons the ball up in the air and the chance is gone.

143

Kateleza has tried the patience of the referee once too often and goes into the book for a late challenge on Reoch.  His third in the match on the same player.

A succession of corners for Arniston around the 63th minute, but nearly every one of them doesn’t clear the first defender, reaching him at about waist height.

The 64th minute sees Cruikshank charging towards the Arniston goal when he is cynically brought down just outside the box by Faulds.  The Montrose player takes the free kick himself, but there is no power in it.

Montrose break on 72 minutes with Watson, but his cross is too hard for Rae in the middle and the chance is gone.

Reid finds himself all alone on the penalty spot in 73 minutes and is pleased that the referee gives offside as he completely miskicked when it looked like he was going to get a second for his side.

165

Kateleza, who had been so prominent for Arniston in the first half has faded from the game as Roselea get on top.

A great ball by Jeffrey in 78 minutes gives Kateleza a chance, but R Taylor makes a great tackle to prevent what looked a certain goal.

The 79th minute sees Montrose sub Tringham stride through on goal and fire in a shot from the edge of the box which is expertly saved by Cornet.

Arniston have better delivery from two corners in the 85th minute, but Roselea defend them well.

A free kick into the box in 87 minutes sees Arniston sub McFadyen get a chance, but he can only head into the side netting.

A good strike by Moffat after he was set up by Kateleza in the last minute is well held by McLeod in the Montrose goal, before an injury time free kick is struck towards goal, but is too far out to trouble the keeper.

There’s still time for a comedy time wasting substitution for Roselea in injury time.

So a narrow win for the away side in a competitive game which could have gone either way, with both sides having plenty of opportunities, but only the one goal to show for their efforts.
